Deruta brings together a ceramic tradition still practiced by local artisans with museums, archaeological production sites and historic buildings. The techniques are passed down from generation to generation. The continuing practice of the craft and the history of ceramic production thus offer different ways of exploring a defining theme of the town.

Ceramic Tradition and Production History

The Museo Regionale della Ceramica di Deruta includes the archaeological area of the Fornaci di San Salvatore. An underground tunnel connects this area to the museum. The production complex was in operation from the second half of the 15th century until the beginning of the 18th century. It comprises two kilns and a basin for purifying clay. The kilns and the clay-purification basin offer different insights into the production site: alongside firing, the complex also includes a stage for purifying the clay.

The Antica Fornace Grazia adds another dimension in Deruta’s historic center. Set up as a museum and exhibition center, it preserves the rooms that were used to fire majolica. Unlike the archaeological Fornaci di San Salvatore, with their historic period of operation, the focus here is on the preserved firing rooms and their presentation as a museum.

Museums, Churches and the History of the Town

The Pinacoteca Comunale is located in the 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli. Together with the Museo Regionale della Ceramica, it forms the town’s museum complex. The two institutions thus come together in a historic building and as part of a shared museum complex.

The Chiesa di San Francesco offers another distinct historical perspective. After being reconstructed following a severe earthquake, the church was consecrated in 1388. It houses important frescoes, including works by Domenico Alfani. The date places the consecration after the reconstruction; the frescoes are among the church’s artistic highlights.

The municipal walking tour of Deruta begins at the Ex Fornace Grazia and takes visitors through the town’s history, churches and historical documents. Its themes thus bring together local history, religious sites and written records. For trip planning, this offers a different perspective from looking at individual museum collections or production sites: the tour explores several historical aspects of the town.

Trails on Perugia Vecchia and Local Food Culture

The hill of Perugia Vecchia has unpaved trails for trekking, mountain biking and trail running. The hill lies on the boundary between the municipalities of Deruta, Torgiano and Bettona. In planning your trip, you can distinguish this landscape from the cultural themes: here the focus is on trails and outdoor activities, while museums, churches and kilns offer other points of interest.

One culinary event is the Sagra di Castelleone, held at the end of July. There, you can try the traditional dish “CANNIBALE”: marinated pork with juniper. If you would like to include this event in your stay, check the dates in advance.
