For a trip to Romita, local history and hiking are the main themes. The settlement is home to the old church of San Gimignano a Petroio; the village also has the Parco giochi della Romita, a green play area along the road that runs through the village. A named route adds a trail with a stated distance, difficulty level and duration. Romita’s local history also includes San Giusto a Petroio and Poggio Petroio.

Church and Building History

San Gimignano a Petroio is an old church in the settlement of Romita. The church of Romita originally developed from a Romanesque chapel. Its present appearance reflects ongoing adaptations over the centuries, particularly in the 17th century, as well as further alterations around the early 20th century. Its Romanesque origins and later changes thus stand side by side as stages in the same building history.

Historical Landmarks

Behind Romita is an old building believed to be the Oratorio di San Giusto a Petroio and the presumed birthplace of San Giovanni Gualberto. This tentative identification is part of its historical context: both names remain possible attributions. The church of San Giusto in Petroio existed in 988. The Oratorio di San Giusto a Petroio was converted to secular use on September 19, 1719.

Poggio Petroio also has its own historical context. The Villa/Castello di Poggio Petroio is considered one of the oldest settlements in the area. The Castello di Poggio Petroio was already owned by the Visdomini family before the year 1000.

Hiking Route and Play Area

A route description dated June 28, 2025, gives “In cammino alla scoperta dei luoghi di origine delle opere e del nostro territorio” a distance of 8 km, a “easy” difficulty rating and a duration of 3 to 4 hours. The distance, difficulty level and time frame help you assess the scope of the route. Check the latest route details before planning. The stated duration of three to four hours helps you allow for the route as a longer block of time in your day’s itinerary; “easy,” by contrast, describes its difficulty rating and says nothing about how long it takes. The two details therefore answer different questions when planning the hike.

The Parco giochi della Romita is a green play area along the road that runs through the village. Alongside the historical attractions, the village therefore has a dedicated play area. For planning purposes, this is a different point of reference from the building history or the hike with its stated duration.
