Montaione: Culture and Landscape

Montaione lies 341 meters above sea level and overlooks the Valdelsa. The center is a small medieval village. The town and surrounding countryside bring together a range of travel interests: architectural and art history, walking and cycling routes, and the tradition of truffle hunting. Town Center, Art and History

The Chiesa di San Regolo stands in the historic center, on Piazza della Repubblica. The façade of the Palazzo Pretorio also tells the story of the town: it is adorned with coats of arms in stone and glazed terracotta. The coats of arms represent the families of people who held important positions in the municipal administration over the centuries. These include the Davanzati, Cateni, Pescioni and Guardini families.

Glassmaking has been practiced in Montaione since the early 14th century. The Museo Civico Sezione Archeologica di Montaione offers another perspective on the past, displaying paleontological and archaeological evidence from Etruscan and Roman settlements. The Mostra permanente degli antichi mestieri, in turn, documents the crafts practiced by Ernesto Gennaro Cecconi throughout his life, using specific work tools. Together, these places offer different perspectives on Montaione’s history—from early settlements to skilled crafts.

San Vivaldo and Historic Sites

At the Gerusalemme di San Vivaldo complex, chapels and small temples are arranged in a wooded area to reproduce, to scale, the layout of Jerusalem at the time. Frescoes and terracotta sculpture groups in the cold technique of the Robbiana school depict episodes from the Passion and the life of Christ. The complex thus combines a spatial concept with specific depictions of religious stories.

The Trekking Urbano route passes through the old streets of the town center and by historic sites. Other destinations with their own history lie outside the center: Castello di Vignale can be reached on foot or by bicycle from the road between San Vivaldo and Iano. Its remains can be visited along with a small church and an old mill nearby. The Cisterna Romana dates from the 3rd century AD and lies about one kilometer along the provincial road from Montaione to Gambassi. A ramp suitable for wheelchair access is available at the Chiesa di San Floriano; confirm current conditions before your visit.

Landscape, Routes and Getting There

The protected Alta Valle del Torrente Carfalo area covers about 220 hectares and is mostly wooded. Its features include centuries-old monumental yew trees, an old beech forest and the clear waters of the Carfalo stream. This natural area differs markedly from the historic sites in the town center: here, the forest and stream shape the landscape.

For cycling trips, mountain-bike routes for the Montaione MTB Trail Area can be downloaded in KML and GPX formats. Check that the files are available before setting off. The Via Francigena can also be explored on foot or by bicycle across gentle hills. If you are traveling by train, the nearby Castelfiorentino station is one option: it is about ten kilometers away, and you can continue from there by taxi or bus. Truffle Tradition and When to Visit

Montaione is known as the “Città del pane,” “Città del Tartufo” and “Città dell’olio.” The historic tradition of truffle hunting dates back to the early 1900s. Between late October and early November, Montaione hosts the “Tartufesta,” a market dedicated to the prized truffle. Check the dates for the current year before making plans. You can then time your trip according to whether you are most interested in historic sites, wooded landscapes or the truffle market.
