Iano combines geological features with a long local history and trails through the surrounding landscape. If you’re looking for hotels for a trip to Iano, these different highlights can help you decide how to plan your visit: you can focus on nature, historical traces, or the trails to the Santuario della Pietrina.

Geology and Landscape Around Iano

At Iano, thermal water rises to the surface at a spring and deposits travertine-bearing fossils. The surrounding hills date back to the Pliocene, approximately eight million years ago. The travertine banks around Iano also tell the story of the area’s geological formation: fissures expose veins of a variety of calcite alabaster, commonly known as onyx alabaster. The nearby area also contains numerous fossil and mineral remains.

Near Iano lies the Selva di Camporena woodland, between the Valdelsa and Valdera. The southwest-facing Falesia Masso del Becco is also near Iano. A signposted trail below the Santuario della Pietrina passes through dense vegetation to this cliff face. The trail to the Santuario, in turn, winds through holm oaks and pines in the Selva di Camporena. These offer contrasting landscape experiences: woodland paths, travertine, and a striking cliff face.

The hill between Iano and Palagio is topped by the Santuario della Pietrina. It is described as one of three islands in Tuscany that formed during the Carboniferous period. From the Santuario, there are sweeping views across the Valdera and its gentle hills as far as Volterra. This gives you two distinct points of interest to plan around without conflating them: the trail through the woodland and vegetation, and the view from the area around the Santuario.

Local History and Seasonal Traditions

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea in Alliano stands in the center of Iano and was first mentioned in 1004. Another historical trace dates much further back: an Etruscan tombstone depicting a warrior, dated to the 5th century BC, was found near Iano. The remains of the Castello di Camporena have also survived in the village. The church, tombstone, and castle ruins point to different periods and provide several tangible reference points for the area’s history.

The extraction of raw materials is also part of Iano’s history. After an agricultural crisis, the village became known in the postwar period for the mining of travertine, serpentine, onyx, and mercury. This historical development adds to the area’s geological story: travertine and onyx appear here not only as features of the landscape but also in connection with the local history of extraction.

Presepi nel Borgo is a seasonal tradition. Since 2009, it has brought Iano to life with a nativity trail through the village starting on December 8. The exhibition extends for about one kilometer through the lanes to the scattered houses. This approximate length describes the extent of the exhibition, not the time it takes to walk it. A ceremonial procession is also held near the Santuario della Pietrina on the last Sunday in September. If this date is important for your trip, check the current event date.

Trails and Directions

To get to Iano from Montaione, take the road that passes through San Vivaldo in the direction of Villamagna. From Iano, the road to Palagio continues up a steep lane to the Santuario della Pietrina. These road connections help distinguish the route to Iano from the excursion destination: the first describes the journey to Iano, while the second connects Iano with the Santuario.

If local history is your main interest, the church, castle ruins, and nativity trail offer several themes to explore. If you’re interested in the landscape and geology, you can focus on the spring, travertine, woodland, and cliff face. The trails to the Santuario and the Falesia pass through different types of surroundings. This can help you choose which parts of Iano to focus on, based on your interests and where you want to stay.
