When looking for a hotel in Cerreto Guidi, the focus of your stay can help guide you: are you especially interested in Medici history, walking or cycling routes, or the rolling hills and olive oil tradition? The local sights and activities offer starting points for different travel plans.

Medici history and historic sites

The Villa Medicea di Cerreto Guidi was built at the behest of Cosimo I de’ Medici as a hunting residence and strategic control point for the surrounding area, particularly in relation to the Padule di Fucecchio. The villa’s connection to hunting is thus linked to its strategic role in the region. The villa is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Medici Villas and Gardens in Tuscany.”

The Museo Storico della Caccia e del Territorio is located on the villa’s first floor. Its collection consists mainly of hunting and firearms dating from the 17th to the 19th century. This period gives the villa’s hunting theme its own historical context.

The parish church of San Leonardo stands beside the Medici villa; its history dates back to the 10th century. The Oratorio della Santissima Trinità dates from 1607 and has 18th-century frescoes. It also houses an altarpiece by Domenico Cresti, known as Il Passignano, created in 1587. The dates associated with the Santuario di Santa Liberata are also qualified: it probably dates from 1336 and is, according to tradition, connected with an oratory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. For these sites, dates and tradition are each part of their historical descriptions.

Circular routes, a stage and a cycle path

The Anelli Medicei comprise six signposted circular walking routes. They start at the Villa Medicea and lead back to the historic town centre. For your planning, this means that the villa and town centre together form the setting described for the routes. A different type of route is the fourth stage of the Via Medicea, which leads to Cerreto Guidi. The sights named along this stage are the Villa Medicea and the Museo della Memoria Locale – MuMeLoc. When comparing the routes, there is therefore a signposted circular route that returns to the town centre, and a stage featuring two named sights.

You can also explore the landscape of the municipality by bike: a cycle path runs between the hamlets of Bassa and Gavena, offering a way to experience the area’s nature and beautiful landscapes. The local walking routes and this cycling connection offer different focuses when choosing an activity.

Rolling hills, olive oil and the Palio

Cerreto Guidi lies in a landscape of gentle hills dominated by traditional vineyards and olive groves. The local olive oil tradition is another way to discover the character of the landscape: Cerreto Guidi is included in the Strada dell’Olio, del Vino e dei Sapori. There, you can taste extra virgin olive oil that is still produced using traditional methods. The landscape and tasting experience complement the historic sites with another connection to the area.

The Palio del Cerro is a special event to note: this historical reenactment in Renaissance costume has been held for over 50 years and takes place on the first Saturday in September in front of the Villa Medicea. If you want to plan your trip around the Palio, this date is the relevant point of reference.

Note about the MuMeLoc

The MuMeLoc is devoted in particular to commemorating the massacre in the Padule di Fucecchio on 23 August 1944. It is temporarily closed to the public. Check its status before your trip if you are planning to visit.
