Stabbia combines historic buildings and memorial sites with a route that offers a connection to the wetland landscape. The Villa-Fattoria di Stabbia is part of the historic settlement; from its hilltop, there are panoramic views of the Padule di Fucecchio. The Bonifica di Stabbia circular route is about five kilometres long. This offers different focuses for planning your trip: architecture and history, remembrance, or a landscape-focused walk.

Villa-Farm and Church Architecture

Cosimo I had the Villa-Fattoria di Stabbia built between 1548 and 1568. A fortification that had previously belonged to the Soderini family was adapted for this purpose. The building’s history therefore encompasses an older fortification and its conversion into the later villa-farm; both are key to understanding this historic building.

The Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo Apostoli can also be described by its architectural form: its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, with a single nave and a transept. The transept forms the cross’s side arm and meets the nave, making the basic layout easy to understand even without specialist knowledge. The baptismal register records that in 1784 the church and rectory were built in one part of the Fattoria Medicea di Stabbia. This entry links the religious building with the history of the farm.

The Bonifica di Stabbia Circular Route

The Bonifica di Stabbia is a circular route about five kilometres long, with paved and unpaved sections. Its approximate length and the changing surfaces are useful details for planning. As trail conditions can change after weather events, check them before setting out. The route passes through land that once belonged to the Fattoria Medicea di Stabbia and, among other places, by the Giardino della Meditazione, a historic site along the way. One section of the route allows you to approach the Padule di Fucecchio and its reed beds from the banks of the Torrente Vincio.

Places of Remembrance

The Giardino della Meditazione commemorates the “Eccidio del Padule di Fucecchio” of 1944. The Lapide ai caduti di Stabbia is a memorial plaque for civilian victims and Italian partisans. The two memorial sites have different focuses: the garden recalls the events of 1944, while the plaque is dedicated to the groups named above.

Planning Your Trip: What to Focus On

For planning your trip, the distinction is useful: the villa-farm and church represent architectural history, while the garden and plaque offer different forms of remembrance. The circular route, by contrast, provides a specific option of about five kilometres, with changing surfaces; one section allows you to approach the Padule and its reed beds. This lets you choose your focus—buildings, remembrance, or a walk outdoors.
