Poggioni is of interest to travelers who want to combine natural landscapes and Medici history in one trip. Local highlights include woodland and wetlands, traces of a former hunting estate, and regional destinations for birdwatching and nature excursions. The cuisine of the host municipality of Cerreto Guidi also plays a role: extra-virgin olive oil is part of the region’s food scene. These themes span different levels—from traces in Poggioni to the protected area and destinations in the nearby surroundings.

Woodland, wetlands and historic landscape

The Bosco and Lago di Poggione form the part of the Natura 2000 site “Bosco di Chiusi e Paduletta di Ramone” located in Cerreto Guidi. This part of the site includes woodland and wetlands, as well as an artificial basin. It was created in the 1960s and has since been fully renaturalized. Its history therefore links an artificial origin with a renaturalized state.

An 18th-century cadastral map describes the historic Bosco di Poggioni as a remaining woodland of Turkey oaks and broom. This earlier description of the landscape adds a specific historical perspective on the woodland to the area’s present-day classification. Scattered traces of the former Medici hunting estate, the Barco mediceo, also remain in Poggioni. The woodland thus represents both a natural landscape and a history visible in individual surviving traces.

Medici history in Poggioni and Cerreto Guidi

The Villa Medicea di Cerreto is located in the host municipality of Cerreto Guidi, not in Poggioni itself. Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici commissioned the villa. Its collection includes portraits of the Medici family, 18th-century estate maps and four 17th-century tapestries. Furniture and wall frescoes from different periods complete its furnishings. Alongside the scattered traces of the former hunting estate, the municipality thus offers a clearly identified example of Medici architectural and collecting history.

Another historical connection is the Palio del Cerro. The event is a historical reenactment in Renaissance costumes and has a history spanning more than 50 years. It takes place in front of the Villa Medicea di Cerreto and is scheduled for the first Saturday in September; the exact date may vary from year to year. If this date is important for your trip, check that year’s program.

Regional food and nature themes

Cerreto Guidi lies along the Strada dell’Olio, del Vino e dei Sapori themed route. Extra-virgin olive oil, still produced using traditional methods, can be tasted in the municipality. This connects the surrounding landscape with a specific regional food experience.

For birdwatching, the nearby Padule di Fucecchio wetland is a destination in its own right: birdwatchers can observe more than 190 bird species there. The nearby Montalbano area has a dense network of trails and routes for trekking and nature excursions. The themes can therefore be distinguished regionally: the Bosco and Lago di Poggione represent woodland and wetlands, Padule di Fucecchio is a birdwatching destination, and Montalbano offers trails and nature excursions.

If you want to focus your trip, these distinctions can help you choose a destination: if you are primarily interested in discovering a historic landscape, the woodland traces and Medici connections take center stage. For birdwatching or trekking, the nearby areas add to the picture of the region, without attributing these activities to the Bosco and Lago di Poggione.
