Turignano: Food, Craftsmanship and Cycling
Accommodation in Turignano
The estate Le Fonti a San Giorgio is associated with the town and offers tastings, dinners in the garden and a workshop; a user-described cycling route also leads to Turignano.
Le Fonti a San Giorgio: Wine and Olive Oil
The estate covers 60 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and woodland. The Giovannelli family runs the estate and has been producing Chianti wine bearing the Chianti DOCG designation, as well as extra virgin olive oil, for three generations. The wines are also produced and aged in the wine cellar. Le Fonti a San Giorgio also follows the principles of integrated farming. Olive oil is produced using organic farming methods. Only products of natural origin are used, leaving no residues in the olive oil.
Cellar Tour, Dinner and Pool
During a wine cellar visit, you can taste the estate’s own Chianti and IGT wines, as well as extra virgin olive oil. Typical local products, cheese and Tuscan salami are served alongside. The cellar visit thus combines several products with food pairings. Information about the visit packages is available on request from the estate.
As a separate dining option, Le Fonti a San Giorgio hosts dinners in the garden every week. These feature wood-fired oven pizza, focaccia and various pizzas. Unlike the tasting in the cellar, the focus here is on sharing a meal. Ask the estate about current availability.
The pool at Le Fonti a San Giorgio is reserved for guests and is equipped with sun loungers and parasols. If you’re considering it for your trip, check with the estate in advance about current access.
Get creative at the “Art in a Bottle” workshop
At the “Art in a Bottle” workshop, participants decorate a Bordeaux bottle using embossed materials. Materials include moulds, stucco, pigments, gold leaf and raised lettering. With expert guidance, participants create personalised glass decorations. The focus is on the creative process; participants can also sample a selection of local wines. This distinguishes the workshop from the cellar visit, which focuses on the estate’s own Chianti and IGT wines, as well as extra virgin olive oil. Information about the workshop packages is available on request from the estate.
Cycling a described route
A cycling route described by a user in March 2022, “Tavarnelle–Marcialla–Montespertoli–San Quirico–Tavarnelle–Poggibonsi,” includes one of two short, very steep climbs to Turignano. The user’s report mentions wide-ranging views and roads that are not very busy in places. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out. The climb is short but also very steep; length and gradient describe two different aspects here.
