There are several highlights to consider for a stay in Chiocchio: the Anello di Chiocchio circular trail, historical road names, church art, and architectural history. When looking for hotels, you can consider whether hiking, cultural and historical topics, or an annual event date should shape your trip. Each topic offers a different starting point for planning, and you can prioritize them according to your interests.

Hiking: the Anello di Chiocchio

The Anello di Chiocchio is a 13 km easy hike along secondary roads and paths. It starts at the car park of Circolo ARCI Chiocchio and includes 280 metres of elevation gain and loss. These details bring together several aspects relevant to planning: distance, elevation profile, terrain, and difficulty. This way, you can consider not only the length but also the character of the route as a possible focus of your stay.

Historical routes and former names

In the 13th century, the via publicana, which ran along the ridge, branched off from the via pubblica at Chiocchio. The via pubblica was later called Strata de Chianti. Chiocchio was formerly known as Fonte al Brocco. The former place name and the road names offer two different perspectives: one concerns the naming of the place, while the other concerns the relationship between the historical routes. If you want to understand Chiocchio in its historical context, you can consider the names and courses of the former roads as well as the hiking loop.

Architectural history at Castello di Mugnana

A different kind of change is at the heart of Castello di Mugnana’s history. In the 14th century, it was transformed from a fortified village into a private family residence. Its historical development therefore cannot be defined by a date alone: what matters is the change from a fortified settlement to private residential use. For travellers interested in culture, this offers a distinct perspective on architectural history, different from that of the historical routes and their names.

Churches and art

Santa Maria a Chiocchio is considered the younger of the village’s two churches. It was formerly called Chiesa della Madonna del Buon Viaggio. The church houses the painting “Riposo dalla fuga in Egitto” (“Rest During the Flight into Egypt”), from the Tuscan school, dated 1616. Its title refers to the rest taken during the flight into Egypt. The former name and the dated work provide two distinct cultural and historical points of reference: one concerns the church’s name, the other a specific work of art.

Pieve di San Donato a Mugnana was built around the year 1000. It houses a censer and a naviculum from the Abbey of San Cassiano a Montescalari. The Pieve also preserves an erratic capital with figures of he-goats damaged at the corners, as well as symbolic motifs such as star-shaped flowers and palmettes. These details provide a different focus from Santa Maria’s dated painting: alongside the construction date and the provenance of two objects, the capital’s specific figures and ornaments take centre stage. If you are interested in the furnishings of historic churches, you can distinguish between the building’s age, the history of its objects, and its decorative details.

An annual event

The Sagra del cinghiale is one of the annual events held at Circolo ARCI Chiocchio. If you want to plan your stay around this festival, check the current event dates before travelling.
