Pontassieve lies at the confluence of the Arno and Sieve rivers. Town history, art and walking trails of varying lengths offer different ways to shape a stay. You can explore the town’s former fortifications and local art, discover the Santa Brigida nature reserve, or make a walking or cycling route the focus of your trip. The route options range from the nine-kilometre Sentiero dei Mulini in the Argomenna Valley to the 172-kilometre Anello del Rinascimento, which has 16 stages and runs around Florence.

Art and History in Pontassieve

The Sala delle Eroine is located in Palazzo Sansoni Trombetta, the seat of Pontassieve Town Hall. It houses a fresco cycle by the 19th-century Florentine painter Ferdinando Folchi. The former city wall can also still be traced through its gates: three of the four city gates have survived. The Museo Geo displays archaeological objects, documentary photographs and masks from around the world. Whether you are interested in art, the built history of the town or collections, each offers a different way to discover Pontassieve.

The Festa Rinascimentale adds a historical re-enactment to the town’s historical offerings. The 2025 edition included historical parades, falconers, children’s games, food stalls, artisans and Renaissance dances, as well as other attractions from times past. Dates and programmes vary from one edition to another; check the dates and programme for the edition you wish to attend before travelling.

Walking Trails and Nature

The Sentiero dei Mulini is a nine-kilometre trail through the Argomenna Valley, combining history, nature and culture. Historical features along the local trail include the Burraia Ninetta, a structure dating from 1868. The Santuario Madonna delle Grazie al Sasso is a place of faith and pilgrimage, as well as a destination for hikers and walkers. The complex houses the visitor centre for the protected Santa Brigida nature reserve. If you are planning to visit the centre, check the latest opening information in advance.

A walking trail just over 13 kilometres long leads from Santa Brigida to Pontassieve. This is distinct from the Anello del Rinascimento: Pontassieve is a starting point for this 172-kilometre route, which runs in 16 stages around Florence and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. These figures represent different scales of planning: a trail between two named places, as opposed to a multi-stage circular route. For both routes, check trail conditions, and for the Anello, also check the signage.

Nature also has a clearly defined highlight: the rockrose of Santa Brigida (Cistus laurifolius L.) grows exclusively in this nature reserve. It blooms seasonally.

Local Wine Traditions

Toscanello d’Oro was established in 1969 to promote the region’s wine traditions and wine products. The event brings producers from Valdisieve to the town squares; individual editions and programmes vary from year to year.
