Montelupo Fiorentino: Ceramic History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Montelupo Fiorentino
Montelupo Fiorentino combines ceramic history with places devoted to its collections and production, as well as routes along the Arno and Pesa rivers.
Ceramic History and Industrial Heritage
Between 1400 and 1530, Montelupo was a production center for majolica for the city of Florence. This period places majolica within the historical connection between Montelupo and Florence. The Ceramic Museum is located at Piazza Vittorio Veneto 11 in Montelupo Fiorentino. Its collection comprises 5,550 pieces of majolica, 1,200 of which have been selected for display. This selection represents part of the larger collection.
The Fornace del Museo was built in 1859, right beside the 14th-century city walls. Graffiti and inscriptions left by former workers have been preserved on its walls. The Fornace also hosts an extensive cultural program about ceramics, work, and history; the program may change. The museum and the Fornace thus offer different ways to explore the subject: selected majolica pieces and preserved traces of work. The Scuola della Ceramica offers tailored educational programs for professionals and ceramic enthusiasts; the specific course offerings may change. The Fornace is also associated with the Morelli family.
Museums and Ceramic Art
The Archaeological Museum of Montelupo Fiorentino is housed in a former religious complex in the park of Villa Medicea dell’Ambrogiana. The Bitossi Archive-Museum is located at the historic site of the manufactory founded by Guido Bitossi in 1921. It is open to the public Monday through Friday by appointment; confirm the arrangements before traveling.
Since 2016, Montelupo Fiorentino has hosted artists who have created site-specific ceramic artworks for the town. Together with the majolica collection and the historical traces of work, this project shows another side of the ceramic tradition: works developed specifically for the town.
Cycling Routes along the Arno and Pesa
The cycling network in Montelupo Fiorentino covers more than ten kilometers. The section of the network within the municipality follows the courses of the Arno River and the Pesa stream. A natural stretch of about seven kilometers runs along the Pesa and passes the Turbone flood retention area. When planning your ride, keep the two figures distinct: more than ten kilometers refers to the network overall, while about seven kilometers refers to the natural stretch along the Pesa. Conditions and signage may change; check both before your ride.
Wine Visits by Reservation
Fattoria di Petrognano is located in the municipality of Montelupo Fiorentino. Visits to the wine cellar and vineyard, as well as tastings, are available by reservation only, including in English. Since visits are by reservation only and arrangements may change, confirm your appointment before traveling.
