Sammontana brings together several starting points for a trip combining outdoor activity, cultural history, and art. The Sentiero CAI 476 provides a concrete basis for hiking and mountain biking plans; Fattoria di Sammontana, Fornace di Sammontana, and Atelier Marco Bagnoli represent different historical and artistic themes. This makes it possible to tailor the focus of your stay to your own interests.

Hiking and mountain biking on the Sentiero CAI 476

The Sentiero CAI 476 is 9.4 km long and has an elevation difference of 240 metres. It is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. The completed 476 circular trail in the 4 Valleys network starts in Sammontana, climbs to Botinaccio, and then descends towards the Arno. Its length, elevation difference, and sequence of uphill and downhill sections provide different points of reference when planning the loop.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria a Sammontana and the artificial Lago artificiale di Sammontana lie along the trail. Check the current signage and trail conditions before setting out.

Fornace and Fattoria: local history

The history of Fornace di Sammontana dates back to 1700. It was established to produce ceramic goods and terracotta materials. Another significant date is 1867, when Michele Dzieduszycki acquired the Fattoria di Sammontana estate, including the main villa, the church, the distillery, and the surrounding farmland. A 12th-century Romanesque church adjoins the Fattoria. The Fattoria was formerly owned by the Medici family.

The church can be described in two specific ways: “Romanesque” refers to its architectural style, while the 12th century places it in time.

Atelier Marco Bagnoli and traces of history

Atelier Marco Bagnoli is located at Via della Quercia 9 in the Sammontana district of Montelupo. The artist conceived this multifunctional space as a total work of art. It houses a temporary exhibition of his works from 1972 to the present, which is constantly changing. The extended period covered by the works and the changing presentation are two distinct aspects.

The Pro Loco of Montelupo organizes a series of events at the atelier, with guided tours and thematic focuses on the works housed there. As the program may change, check which events are currently scheduled before visiting. The atelier is intended to become established as part of the local artistic heritage.

Villa di Salingrosso also offers a historical point of reference: it probably already existed in the Middle Ages. The surviving traces of towers and the still-standing perimeter walls point to this possible origin.

Agriculture and different layers of history

Another historical connection is the Fattoria di Sammontana’s former association with the Medici family: it was once in their possession. Today, the Fattoria produces high-quality wine and olive oil according to organic and biodynamic principles.

The dates provide a brief historical overview: 1700 marks the beginning of ceramic and terracotta production, 1867 the acquisition of the Fattoria, and 1972 the start of the period covered by the atelier exhibition. This makes it possible to distinguish the timelines of industrial history, ownership history, and changing art presentations.
