Zafferana Etnea is one of the municipalities in Parco dell’Etna. Its municipal territory ranges from about 400 m above sea level to the volcano’s 3,340 m summit. In between are Mediterranean scrubland, lava flows, dense forests, and the desert-like summit zone. Zafferana Etnea is considered a starting point for exploring the landscapes and nature trails within its territory.

Mount Etna Landscapes and Viewpoints

From the viewpoints in Zafferana Etnea, the view stretches from Calabria to Augusta. Ancient craters and lava flows spreading down the slopes can also be seen from there. A viewpoint in Piazza Umberto I looks out over the sea and the town gardens below. The views therefore vary by location: the piazza combines a sea view with greenery in the town, while the viewpoints open up wider coastal and volcanic panoramas.

A distinctive natural landmark on Mount Etna’s eastern side is the Ilice di Carrinu, also known as Ilice di Pantano: a holm oak more than 700 years old in Zone B of the park. The tree is part of Italy’s heritage of green monuments and is included on the list of 150 trees of exceptional historical and monumental value. A hiking trail from Contrada Dagalone in Zafferana Etnea leads to the tree, following an old, partly unpaved mule track for most of the way. Visiting the tree therefore also means following a route whose course reflects its former use as a mule track.

Hiking Trails on Mount Etna

Piano del Vescovo is crossed by the SP 92, which runs from Zafferana Etnea to the Rifugio Sapienza area. Piano del Vescovo is also the starting point for Trail 727 to Serra del Salifizio. The trail passes a lava cliff used as a climbing wall and leads to a ridge overlooking the Valle del Bove.

The Piano dell’Acqua–Monte Calanna route is also described by its connection to other trails: it branches off Trail 704 at 747 m above sea level, less than 800 m from the trail’s endpoint near the hamlet of Ballo in the municipality of Zafferana Etnea. Another hiking trail in Zafferana Etnea offers views of Mount Etna, the Valle del Bove, and the Ionian coast. The SP 92 between Zafferana Etnea and the Rifugio Sapienza area also provides access to a trail along which you will find the small Rifugio di Casa del Vescovo and several caves once used to produce and store snow.

Architecture and Guided Tours

The Chiesa Madre Santa Maria della Provvidenza is considered an emblem of Sicilian Baroque. Its façade and the two matching towers on either side are made of white stone; there is also a black external staircase made of lava stone. The contrast between these materials shapes the church’s architectural details.

Local Specialties and Cultural Traditions

The Sciatore is a milk sponge cake coated in dark chocolate. It was created in Zafferana Etnea in the 1940s to provide energy for skiers on Mount Etna. Honey is also associated with the town: Zafferana Etnea belongs to the “Città del miele” network and, according to local tourism information, produces about 15 percent of Italy’s honey.

Etna in Scena is a summer cultural events series in Zafferana Etnea. For more than 20 years, it has presented music, theater, dance, and comedy on the slopes of the volcano. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates for your travel period.

The history of the Ottobrata Zafferanese dates back to its founding in 1978. It was established to promote high-quality products from Mount Etna and the surrounding region, including grapes, apples, honey, chestnuts, and mushrooms. In the 1990s, it expanded to include displays of traditional crafts from the Mount Etna region: these included working lava stone and wrought iron, basket weaving, and decorating Sicilian carts. These historical milestones bring together the themes of agriculture and crafts without specifying a current event date.
