Sant'agata Li Battiati: Church Art, Park and Patron Saint's Festival
Accommodation in Sant'agata Li Battiati
What makes Sant'agata Li Battiati a distinctive travel destination? The local attractions offer several points of interest: the architectural and artistic history of Chiesa Madre Maria SS. Annunziata, the legend surrounding Cappella del Velo, the botanical character of Parco Paternò del Toscano, and the patron saint's festivities in August. When choosing a hotel for your stay, consider whether church art, plant life or the festival programme will be a particular focus of your trip.
Church Art and Local History
Chiesa Madre Maria SS. Annunziata is the town's main church. It was built around the mid-1680s. Its façade is designed in the Romanesque style; the staircase and portal are made of lava stone. Inside is a painting of Saint Lawrence, a copy of Titian's “Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence”. Architecture, lava stone and a specific art-historical subject come together here. The Romanesque façade and lava-stone features offer a different point of interest from the painting, whose subject refers to Titian's work.
Cappella del Velo also links local history with its own tradition. According to local legend, it is connected with the 1444 eruption of Mount Etna: the veil of Saint Agatha is said to have slowed the lava and eventually brought it to a halt. A small church was built at the site of Cappella del Velo in the 17th century, becoming the town's first parish church. The account of the eruption and the later building history refer to different periods; the story of the veil remains a legend.
Lava Stone and Botanical Diversity
Parco Paternò del Toscano is set among lava stone, covers about four hectares and offers a landscape of botanical interest. The plant environments described include an Etna forest and subtropical vegetation. Collections of palms and succulents, as well as a rock garden, add to this character. The park thus offers a distinct contrast to the churches: here, the focus is on vegetation, lava stone and garden areas. Individual plantings may change over time.
Patron Saint's Festival and Getting There
The patron saint's festivities take place in August and are dedicated to Saint Lawrence. On the eve of the festival, residents of Battiati organise an auction to raise donations for the poor. The celebration also includes the so-called “Svelata” of the saint at Chiesa Madre Maria Santissima Annunziata: it is scheduled for 10 August at 9 a.m. If you are planning your trip around the festivities, check that year's programme, especially the times and schedule.
