Paternò brings together Norman architectural history, sacred art, recurring festivals and natural attractions. When choosing a hotel, you can consider which focus you want to shape your stay: the castle and its history, a painting with a specific date, religious sites and celebrations, or the Salinelle and the Simeto. This lets you explore the town based on specific interests rather than a general sightseeing itinerary.

The Norman Castle and Its Views

The three-storey Norman Castle was built in 1072 by the Norman count Roger of Hauteville. The lava-stone building has a footprint measuring 24.30 by 18 metres and is about 34 metres high. From its terrace, you can look out over the town of Paternò and the Plain of Catania. Architectural history and sweeping views of the town and plain come together in one place.

The municipality reported a temporary closure to the public on 30 June 2026. Check access before your visit.

Churches, Art and Museum

The Church of Maria Santissima Annunziata is Paternò’s mother church. It houses the painting of the Madonna dell'Itria, created by Sofonisba Anguissola in 1579. The work offers a specific artistic focus with a clear date. Another religious site is the Madonna della Consolazione sanctuary on Paternò’s historic hill.

The Museo Civico Gaetano Savasta displays finds dating from the Neolithic period to more recent times, mainly pottery and smaller objects from local excavations. The church and museum offer different perspectives: the former focuses on a particular painting, while the latter spans a long period of archaeological finds. If you are interested in history, you can choose between a single work of art and the broader perspective of a collection.

Festa di Santa Barbara Throughout the Year

The Festa di Santa Barbara is a recurring civic and religious celebration in honour of Saint Barbara. The main celebration takes place on 4 December. Other traditional dates include 27 May, known as “Santa Barbara delle rose”, and 27 July, known as “Santa Barbara di mezza estate”.

The 2025 edition was scheduled to run from 3 to 5 December. Individual programmes may vary. If you want to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates for the relevant year.

Salinelle and Simeto: Natural Landscapes and Birdwatching

The Salinelle dei Cappuccini are a natural area in Paternò with landscape value and significance for the regional cultural heritage. The Region of Sicily classifies the Salinelle of Paternò as a geosite of global significance. Check the current access and protection measures before visiting.

At Ponte Barca, two roads run along the banks of the Simeto by the dam: one on the left bank and one on the right. A nature article from February 2025 describes observing many bird species along one of the riverside roads, on foot or by car. Check current access conditions in advance. The two landscapes have distinct features: the Salinelle focus on natural surroundings and cultural heritage, while Ponte Barca offers riverside scenery and birds. When planning your stay, you can decide which aspects interest you most.
