Viagrande: Volcanic Landscapes, Butterflies and History
Accommodation in Viagrande
Viagrande brings together landscapes, natural history and historical sites that appeal to different interests when planning a trip. Gentle hills and Monte Serra shape the views of the volcanic landscape; the Casa delle Farfalle is dedicated to butterflies and other invertebrates. Play and exercise take center stage at Parco Aniante, while Chiesa dell’Idria and Chiesa Antica offer different connections to the town’s ecclesiastical heritage. During your stay, you can weigh up nature, exercise and local history.
Hill Country and Monte Serra
Gentle hills, partly formed by layers of ancient lava flows, shape the landscape of Viagrande. Part of the municipality lies within Parco dell’Etna. Monte Serra, an adventitious volcanic cone, is located near the town center. The collapse of the crater’s summit area and one flank gave it its characteristic horseshoe shape. A staircase of about 350 lava-stone steps is the most direct route to the summit. The solitary cone creates a different focal point from the municipality’s gentle hills: here, a striking volcanic formation meets a direct route up to the summit. The hills are partly the result of layers of ancient lava flows, while the cone’s horseshoe shape is due to collapses.
Butterflies and Tropical Invertebrates
At the Casa delle Farfalle del Monte Serra, a butterfly enclosure is home to butterflies among tropical plants and flowers. It also houses invertebrates from tropical forests, including stick insects, leaf insects and giant beetles. A visit includes an engaging lesson on the world of insects and the biology of butterflies. Plants, different invertebrates and educational activities come together here. If you are comparing nature-related attractions, the Casa offers a different perspective from Monte Serra: plants and insects are the focus here, while the mountain is known for its volcanic form and the route to the summit.
Play and Exercise at Parco Aniante
Parco Aniante is a green oasis in the heart of Viagrande. Its inclusive playground has shock-absorbing surfacing and equipment that children with different abilities can use. There is also an outdoor fitness area with exercise stations for younger and older people. The park offers different activities side by side: play in an inclusive playground and exercise at the fitness stations. Compared with the Casa delle Farfalle, the focus here shifts to play and exercise.
Ecclesiastical Heritage in Viagrande
Viagrande’s ecclesiastical heritage can also be explored through two distinct points of interest. Chiesa dell’Idria was consecrated on 14 January 1744. The remains of Chiesa Antica are also part of Viagrande’s artistic and historical heritage. A precisely dated event and architectural remains thus offer different ways to explore local history.
