Maletto brings together trails and landscapes with a layered local history. When planning your stay, you can choose from a range of interests: walks and picnics in Parco Suburbano “Pizzo Filicia,” a trekking route with a stated distance and walking time, or cultural topics ranging from archaeological finds to medieval and later buildings. This lets you focus on the interests that will shape your trip to Maletto.

Hiking Trails and Nature

Parco Suburbano “Pizzo Filicia” is located in Contrada Spirini in Maletto, on a hill about 1,140 metres high. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Etna and the Nebrodi Mountains. The park has trails and steps, as well as small equipped barbecue areas, and is suitable for walks and picnics. Here, scenic views and walking trails come together.

A longer hike follows Sentiero 712 “Fontana Murata–Pista Altomontana.” The route is 8.71 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and suitable for trekking and cycling. The stated walking time is two to three hours. It begins at Fontana Murata in the municipality of Maletto, at an altitude of 1,218 metres, and reaches Pista Altomontana at 1,626 metres. The distance, difficulty level and walking time provide different points of reference when planning your hike.

Rifugio Monte Maletto can be reached from Maletto via Sentiero 712, Pista Altomontana and Sentiero 714. It is an open forest bivouac with a maximum of 16 sleeping places, a cistern and a fireplace. Excursions around Monte Maletto are possible in the area around the refuge. Along the way, you can observe stands of aspen as far as Monte Guardirazzi; beech stands occur there at the vegetation boundary. Observing different types of tree stands is therefore one of the nature-related aspects of these excursions.

Nordic skiing also has a specific connection to the area: a circular route for the sport is designated on Mount Etna within the municipality of Maletto.

Culture and Local History

Museo civico “Salvo Nibali” in Maletto displays archaeological finds from the Neolithic, various metal cultures and the Greco-Roman period. They come from excavations in the area around Maletto. The museum also presents the region’s archaeological, cultural, folk-ethnological and anthropological heritage through detailed educational and museum exhibitions. Maletto’s history is dated to 1263, when Castello di Maletto was built. The settlement developed around it in several phases. During the war between the Angevins and Aragonese, which ended in 1372, the castle served an important defensive role for Randazzo on behalf of the Aragonese. Rocca del Fano was probably already fortified in the Arab-Norman period with a single tower used for observation and signalling.

Church architecture and local history can also be understood through specific dates. Chiesa di S. Antonio di Padova was built between 1783 and 1786. Chiesa dei Sacri Cuori di Gesù e Maria was elevated to the status of Maletto’s parish church on 28 May 1877, replacing the earlier Church of San Michele Arcangelo; its bell tower was completed in 1883. The historical themes therefore span from the medieval castle to buildings from the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Fragola di Maletto

Fragola di Maletto is a local product. The strawberries are grown on an area of 50 hectares located entirely within the municipality. They are considered to be of exceptionally high quality and spoil easily, so they are sold at the local market. The growing area, their perishable nature and the place of sale are closely connected.
