Randazzo: Churches, Museums and Lava Stone on Mount Etna
Accommodation in Randazzo
Randazzo lies on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Churches and museums tell the story of art, history and natural science; streets and lanes paved with lava stone, along with trails in the volcanic area, complete the picture of the town. For planning your trip, it helps to compare your options clearly: Are you mainly looking for historic architecture and collections, or would you also like to focus on the landscape and its trails?
Churches with art and distinctive details
The Chiesa di San Nicolò dates back to the 13th century. Inside is a marble statue of San Nicola di Bari, created by Antonello Gagini in 1523. This connects a specific work of art with the age of the church building without conflating the two dates: the church is medieval, while the statue was created later.
At the Chiesa San Martino, the surviving 13th-century bell tower stands out for its paired, two-coloured bifora and trifora windows. These terms refer to window designs with two and three openings, respectively. The exterior of the Chiesa di Santa Maria makes a different impression: it is built entirely from black blocks of lava stone. Inside is the Byzantine fresco Madonna del Pileri. Together, the three churches illustrate different aspects of Randazzo’s architectural and artistic history: a dated work, surviving window designs and a fresco.
Archaeological and natural science collections
The Museo archeologico Paolo Vagliasindi is housed in the Castello svevo, a tower built into the city wall. The museum displays finds dating from the 6th to the 4th century BC; most come from Sant’Anastasia in Randazzo. Their date range and predominantly local origin give the archaeological collection a clear connection to the town.
The Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali features natural history and geology. The Priolo ornithological collection comprises around 2,000 specimens representing about 400 different species. There is also a palaeontology room with fossils, minerals, rocks and shells, as well as remains of Pleistocene wildlife. If you would like to include collections alongside churches in your trip, you’ll find both archaeological and natural history exhibits here.
Mount Etna landscapes and trails
Trails in the Mount Etna area around Randazzo cross older and more recent lava flows. They lead to Monte Spagnolo and its beech forest, as well as to the Grotta del Gelo. The Sentiero naturalistico Burrò is a named walking trail in the area. Trails 717 and 717A provide access to Mount Etna from the volcanic slope facing Randazzo. Alongside the historic sites, the selection therefore also includes specific destinations and routes in the volcanic landscape.
The lower mountain slopes offer a different landscape: there are vineyards, olive groves and orchards, as well as traditional palmenti and olive mills. Randazzo’s streets and lanes are also made of lava stone, so you’ll encounter this material both in the townscape and at the Chiesa di Santa Maria. The Alcantara River Park is also located near Randazzo. Its many trails and paths follow the river’s curves and lead to scenic places, some with a wild appearance, such as the famous gorges.
