Platamona: Beach, Wetland and Trails
Accommodation in Platamona
Platamona is known for a long, wide beach with fine sand in the center of the Gulf of Asinara. Another landscape highlight is the Stagno di Platamona wetland. When planning your trip, you can choose between the bathing area, nature observation, and routes on foot or by bicycle. The coast shapes the experience at the beach; at the Stagno, plants and nesting waterbirds take center stage.
Beach and bathing area
Platamona Beach is a long, wide stretch of coast with fine sand. Showers are among the beach’s facilities. A staircase at the Rotonda di Platamona provides access to the beach; a municipal update dated July 31, 2025, identifies this staircase as an access point.
A 2024 municipal accessibility notice mentions wide wooden walkways in the bathing area, suitable for wheelchairs, strollers, and pedestrians. They connect to arrival areas and reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities. The same notice lists 16 equipped seating areas with umbrellas, chairs, and grab rails.
Free supervised bathing was offered at the beach until September 30, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Check the current hours for later seasons.
Wetland and birdlife
The Stagno di Platamona wetland is about 3 kilometers long, up to 250 meters wide, and covers around 95 hectares. The Rio Buddi Buddi feeds it with fresh water. Endemic plant species and rare plants grow in the wetland and along its banks.
The Stagno provides habitat for nesting waterbirds, including mallards, purple swamphens, marsh harriers, and egrets. The area is suitable for nature photography and birdwatching. Those interested in plants will find a botanical focus here alongside the birdlife.
The Stagno e Ginepreto di Platamona area is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is part of the Natura 2000 network. This designation adds a specific protected-area classification to the wetland’s natural significance.
Walking and cycling routes
The “In bici sul Litorale” route can be traveled by bicycle or on foot and leads to Stagno e Ginepreto di Platamona. It is therefore one way to include the protected area as a route destination in your trip plans.
At Stagno di Platamona, the Cammino di Santu Jacu includes a marked section through the pine forest. Part of this section runs along wooden walkways. The path runs between pine and juniper trees, parallel to the edge of the wetland.
The routes offer different experiences: “In bici sul Litorale” is designed for both cycling and walking, while the Cammino di Santu Jacu is defined by its marked section, wooden walkways, and route between pines and junipers. This makes it possible to compare the modes of travel with the landscape experience that matters most for your trip plans.
