Codrongianos: Church Art and Crafts
Accommodation in Codrongianos
Codrongianos brings together a range of cultural themes: Romanesque-Pisan architecture, religious art, medieval history and traditional craft techniques. Vineyards and olive groves are also part of the landscape. If you are planning a trip to Codrongianos and looking for a hotel, these themes may shape your choice of destination. Consider whether you are particularly interested in architecture, historical collections or local traditions.
Romanesque Architecture and Church Art
The Basilica della SS. TrinitĂ di Saccargia is an example of Romanesque-Pisan architecture in Sardinia. The Church of Santa Croce in Codrongianos is another of the buildings mentioned: it was built in the Romanesque style in the 13th century. Santa Croce also houses a painting by the Florentine painter Baccio Gorini.
Another art-related site is the Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul. It houses two large altarpieces: one depicts the Conversion of Saint Paul, while the other portrays the patronage of the Blessed Virgin. Both works are attributed to Baccio Gorini. These artworks offer different points of interest: the altarpieces combine religious themes with an attribution to an artist, while Santa Croce is described both in terms of its period of construction and style, and for a painting by Gorini.
Collections and History at the Ce.Do.C.
The Ce.Do.C. is divided into three sections with different historical focuses. The medieval section explores the monastic settlement of Saccargia, as well as life, society and the economy of villages in medieval Sardinia. If you are interested in local history beyond the Middle Ages, the historical section holds archival documents and historical records relating to Codrongianos and its surrounding area from 1800 to 1900.
The historical-artistic section contains paintings, most of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries and were donated to the parish of San Paolo by Canon Sanna Obino. It also includes old copies of famous paintings by Raphael and Guido Reni. The Ce.Do.C. also houses painted altarpieces from the late 15th and 16th centuries, originally located in the Abbey of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia. In this way, the same cultural context brings together the history of a medieval settlement, archival material from the 19th century and artworks from different centuries.
A more recent chapter is MuArC – Museo d’Arte e Comunità . It was inaugurated in Codrongianos on 29 May 2026 as a new space for art, memory and participation. Its inauguration is a dated milestone in the town’s more recent cultural history.
Crafts, Festival and Landscape
Traditional craft techniques are passed down through generations in Codrongianos: the weaving of sos coinzolos and the fine embroidery of sos corittos. Since 2006, Fattende in Codronzanu has showcased the skills and knowledge of craftspeople, professionals and interested people from Codrongianos. Alongside buildings and collections, traditional craftsmanship and its transmission are also a focus.
The Feast of the Santissima Trinità di Saccargia takes place on the Sunday after Pentecost. It includes a procession and religious rites, as well as performances, dances, poetry competitions, folk music and tastings. Check the local programme for the relevant year before your trip. Vineyards and olive groves are another defining feature of Codrongianos’s landscape. Cultural history and rural character thus offer two different perspectives on the destination.
You can choose Codrongianos according to the themes you want to shape your trip, then look for a suitable hotel for your stay.
