Florinas’s cultural attractions include prehistoric burial sites, a settlement complex with a distinctive assembly house, the Church of Santa Croce and folklore. The sites differ in their architectural forms and historical periods. If you plan your trip around a theme, you can combine the stone structures and local architectural history with music and the Figulinas Festival.

Stone Burial Sites and Settlements

The Campu Lontanu burial site stands out because its design replicates features of a giants’ tomb. It occupies a commanding position above the course of the Mannu River and at the foot of the Coros plateau. Its dating is also noteworthy: pottery from the Early Bronze Age Bonnanaro culture was found nearby. The monument also appears to have been built during this period.

The S'Abbadia necropolis comprises four underground tombs carved into two limestone boulders. Tomb IV comprises seven chambers and was also created in a limestone boulder. The form of the complex invites comparison with its distinctive construction: the underground spaces were carved directly out of the bedrock rather than built as freestanding structures. The four tombs are a few metres from the Florinas–Banari road, just before Santa Maria de Sea.

The Punta Unossi settlement complex offers a different example. It lies on the Sa Cuguttada plateau, at the foot of the Punta Unossi hill and above the deep Giunchi Valley. The complex includes a large circular assembly house. A circular bench runs along its walls, with another circular feature at its centre. The circular shape thus defines both the room and its furnishings. The settlement complex is described as a typical sanctuary village.

Santa Croce and Local Folklore

The Church of Santa Croce is located in the northeast of the town of Florinas, on Piazza Santa Croce. The Confraternity of Prayer and Death had it built in the 17th century; construction was completed in 1691. This gives the church a different historical significance from the prehistoric burial sites. Its location on the piazza and its documented building history help place it within the town’s history.

Music offers another way to explore local culture. Su Ballu Tundu Fiolinesu is accompanied by singing, guitar and accordion. The Figulinas Festival is an international folklore festival in Sardinia, held in Florinas in the province of Sassari. Every August, it brings together folklore groups from around the world. The festival also promotes typical local products and offers the opportunity to sample local dishes; the specific offerings may vary from one edition to another. Check the festival dates before your trip if you want to plan your visit around them.

Each of these themes offers a different focus: Campu Lontanu and S'Abbadia provide insights into tombs carved in stone, while Punta Unossi highlights a settlement complex centred on a circular assembly house. Santa Croce represents the town’s architectural history, while the festival and dance add music and folklore to the picture. This lets you choose which cultural sites and events to focus on according to your interests, without reducing them to a single period or form of expression.
