Viddalba combines archaeological remains, churches, and Gallurese traditions with opportunities for outdoor activities. The MAV – Viddalba Archaeological Museum and the San Giovanni Archaeological and Natural History Park shed light on different periods in the town’s history. There are also rural trails, opportunities for climbing and paragliding, and the San Leonardo festival in the second half of May. Depending on whether you want to focus on cultural history, landscape, or exercise, you can choose different themes for planning your trip.

Archaeology from the Neolithic to the Roman Era

The MAV documents the history of the area from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages. Notable exhibits include numerous Roman “a specchio” funerary stelae, found in the nearby San Leonardo necropolis. The collection also includes Roman pottery, glass vessels, gold jewelry and gemstones, coins, and bronze objects. At the museum, you can encounter both everyday items and evidence of Roman funerary culture.

The museum hosts temporary exhibitions, cultural events, themed tours, and conferences. If you want to plan your trip around a particular event, check the current schedule in advance.

The San Giovanni Archaeological and Natural History Park offers another perspective on the area’s long history of settlement. It lies on the right bank of the Coghinas, on a densely vegetated hill. The site includes cave tombs known as Domus De Janas, associated with the Late Neolithic. Excavations there also uncovered huts from a Nuragic village. Later, an extensive Roman necropolis occupied the site, with numerous types of burials, including figured funerary stelae. The sequence of Neolithic cave tombs, a Nuragic village, and a Roman necropolis makes San Giovanni a place with several archaeological layers spanning different periods.

Churches and Local Traditions

The Church of San Giovanni di Viddalba is a Romanesque building dating from the 11th century. The small rural Church of San Leonardo di Noblac has a different history: it is probably of medieval origin, but was substantially altered later. The San Leonardo festival takes place in the church’s vicinity every year in the second half of May. If you are planning a trip for the festival, confirm the exact date for that year.

Language and customs are also part of the area’s local character: the Gallurese language and Gallurese traditions are widespread in Viddalba. Festivals and fairs offer an opportunity to sample Gallurese soup, meat, cheese, and wine. These dishes are associated with festive occasions; they are not a standalone visitor attraction available year-round. If local culture is important to your trip, the festival tradition and regional dishes can be a focus in their own right.

Trails, Mountains, and the Coghinas

Trekking and horseback-riding excursions follow rural paths through the stazzi and up to the heights that bound the area. Itinerario 3, “San Gavino – Terme di Casteldoria,” runs through the municipality of Viddalba, starts on Provincial Road 58, and is about five kilometers long. Since trail surfaces and access conditions may change, check them locally before setting out. Sport fishing is also practiced in Viddalba.

Monti Ruiu and Monte San Gavino offer opportunities for paragliding and climbing. There are twenty bolted climbing routes there. The mountains thus offer two different activities; the twenty routes are for climbing, not paragliding.

The similarly named thermal sites can also be distinguished by their location: the Piscine Termali di Casteldoria are in the municipality of Viddalba. Across the Coghinas are the Terme di Casteldoria, in the municipality of Santa Maria Coghinas. The names therefore refer to places in two municipalities on opposite banks. If you are specifically interested in the Piscine, keep this distinction in mind when planning your trip.
