Accommodation in Perfugas
Perfugas offers several distinct points of interest for planning your trip: sacred art, church architecture, paleobotanical finds and a river landscape. You can choose your focus based on whether you are particularly interested in art and architecture, geological history or river nature. Cultural highlights include the Retablo di San Giorgio, the Museo Diocesano e Retablo di San Giorgio and the rural church of Chiesa di San Giorgio.
Art and architecture
The Retablo di San Giorgio is 8.60 metres high and 6.40 metres wide. It consists of 52 wooden panels painted in oil and is designed in the Gothic-Aragonese style. Its dimensions, material, structure and style can be clearly distinguished: the dimensions describe the work as a whole, the number of panels its multi-part structure, and the style classification its artistic context.
The Museo Diocesano e Retablo di San Giorgio is located in the parish church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Its collection includes silverware and goldsmithing, as well as wooden sculptures from various periods. This broadens the perspective on sacred art to include other materials and forms of art. If you are interested in this area, the collection offers different points of focus: metalwork and wooden sculptures can be considered as separate groups, while the sculptures are also associated with different periods.
The rural church of Chiesa di San Giorgio stands on a volcanic rock near an imposing nuraghe, which gave the church its name. The building dates from the 15th century, is made of red volcanic rock and was built in the Gothic-Catalan style. This is a different regional style classification from the Gothic-Aragonese style of the retablo. Comparing the two helps distinguish the description of the panel painting from the architecture of the church. The church’s location on the rock and the nuraghe also provide concrete aspects of its history and architectural setting.
Petrified forest and river landscape
Plant fossils from the petrified forest of Anglona are on display at the MAP – Museo Archeologico Paleobotanico. This forest formed between 30 and 15 million years ago. The fossils thus offer a paleobotanical perspective on the distant geological past. The petrified forest, discovered on the banks of the Rio Battana, is accessible to visitors at the MAP – Museo Archeologico Paleobotanico di Perfugas and at the nature and landscape observation point in Località Monte Santu Selvadore. As access arrangements may change, it is best to check visiting options in advance.
The Coghinas – Lago di Castel Doria river landscape offers a different connection with nature. Along old agricultural paths, you can observe river landscapes and the local river fauna. This offers a different focus from the fossils: here the focus is on the landscape and river fauna, while there it is on plant fossils and the formation of the petrified forest. The two topics can therefore be distinguished by their respective connections with nature, without combining them into a single attraction.
