At Fiume Santo Beach, coastal scenery meets nature, while a Roman villa and a paleontological site point to very different periods. When choosing a destination, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights: the beach defines a coastal stay, the Stagno di Pilo offers a glimpse of wetlands and birdlife, while the site’s history reaches far back into geological time.

Beach and Lagoon Landscape

Fiume Santo Beach lies about 25 kilometers northwest of Sassari and stretches along a coastline that continues toward Ezzi Mannu and Stintino. The beach is characterized by light-colored sand and quartz grains, and the water is clear. Behind the beach lies the Stagno di Pilo, recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) because of its rich flora and fauna. The Stagno di Pilo is well suited to birdwatching.

In the regional area around Fiume Santo, the lagoon system of Stagno di Pilo, Casaraccio and Saline di Stintino includes the priority habitats of coastal lagoons (1150*) and Mediterranean salt steppes (1510*). The natural area therefore extends beyond the immediate beach setting. For your trip, you can distinguish between the themes: the beach focuses on the coast and water, while the Stagno di Pilo offers birdwatching in a wetland.

Roman Antiquity and Fossils

The Roman villa of Fiume Santo is located in the Nurra di Sassari area on the north coast, at the mouth of the river of the same name and a few miles from the ancient colony of Turris Libisonis. It adds a tangible connection to Roman antiquity to the beach and nature themes.

A paleontological site was discovered at the Fiume Santo power station in 1994. Thousands of animal bones made it possible to reconstruct the regional ecosystem during the Miocene. The fossil fauna includes remains of Oreopithecus bambolii, nicknamed “Proto,” as well as giraffes, antelopes, small amphibians and reptiles, including a crocodile. Unlike birdwatching at the Stagno di Pilo, these fossils help reconstruct a Miocene ecosystem. A nature experience and a view far back into geological history sit side by side.

Getting There and Seasonal Planning

From Sassari, you can reach the beach via the signposted Fiume Santo turnoff. After the paved road to the coast, a short unpaved section leads to the parking areas. Take this final stretch into account when planning your journey and check the road conditions before setting out.

For the 2026 tourist season, Municipal Ordinance 67/2026 regulated traffic and parking at Fiume Santo Beach. If you are planning a later season, check the local regulations in force at that time.
