In Cessole, church architecture, a medieval-style historic center and recurring festivals reflect different facets of the town. The parish church, Sant’Alessandro and the Santuario della Madonna della Neve each offer their own historical features; the remains of the former castle and festive traditions add to them. If you take these themes into account when choosing your destination, you can explore the town’s history through a range of buildings and customs.

Parish Church and Local History

Cessole’s parish church was completed in 1784 and designed by Giacomo Carretto, a pupil of Juvarra. It comprises two churches arranged one above the other. The lower one is the oratory of the Confraternity of the Disciplined, also known as Chiesa dei Battuti. Several panels from a 16th-century Stations of the Cross are preserved there. In this way, one building brings together different historical layers: the completion of the parish church in the 18th century and the older Stations of the Cross panels in the lower oratory.

The historic center retains a distinctly medieval character. In the evening, careful lighting highlights its stones, arches and dry-stone walls. At the highest point of the town center, the foundations of an ancient tower and traces of the walls of the former castle remain. A Casaforte is also located there; it initially served military purposes and was later used as a residence. These details about the townscape and the Casaforte’s changing use add further aspects of Cessole’s history to the architectural history of the parish church.

Two Churches with Distinctive Characters

The Santuario della Madonna della Neve is a 16th-century church. Its features include a colonnaded porch at the front and a slender bell tower. Sant’Alessandro, by contrast, is a Baroque church in the lower part of Cessole, across the Bormida. The two churches differ in their period, style and location, as well as in their architecture.

If you would like to visit the interior of Sant’Alessandro, you can enquire at the nearby Albergo del Ponte. Confirm whether a visit is possible before you go. When exploring the town’s history, you can therefore distinguish the buildings’ exterior features—such as the colonnaded porch, bell tower and Baroque style—from the question of whether an interior visit is possible on your chosen date.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Sagra delle frittelle takes place on the third Sunday in May and includes a rural procession. Another annual occasion is the Feast of the Madonna della Neve on August 5. It combines a Mass with social gatherings and the traditional games of Pantalera and Bocce. The two festivals thus differ both in their dates and in the activities described.

A living Nativity scene on Christmas Eve, beginning at 10 p.m., is also part of Langa tradition. It takes place in the lanes of the old town center, which are lit only by torches for the occasion. Alongside the festivals in May and August, there is therefore also a Christmas tradition set against a distinctive nighttime backdrop. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific date and program in advance.

Riverside Setting and the Sternìa

The Cucca area lies on the right bank of the Bormida di Millesimo, opposite Cessole’s historic center. The Sternìa is another local feature: a section of this historic path climbs uphill from the Casaforte toward the hill. These are two different ways of relating to the surroundings: Cucca is described by its position beside the river and opposite the town center, while the Sternìa is described by its uphill route from the Casaforte. Both details add geographical and historical aspects to the picture of the churches, town center and festivals.
