Mombaruzzo: Heritage, Trails and Amaretti
Accommodation in Mombaruzzo
Mombaruzzo combines a rich local history with cultural and culinary offerings. For your trip planning, you can choose from a range of themes: the architectural history of Borgo Castello and its churches, geological features along the Rio Secco, regional amaretti, and wine and distillery experiences. Each stop has its own theme and way of visiting.
Borgo Castello and historic buildings
Porta Merlera marks the former entrance, with its drawbridge, to the original fortress of Mombaruzzo, which belonged to the Marquises of Monferrat. The Torre Civica adds to this picture: the Gothic tower dates from the mid-13th century and served as a watchtower. In the 13th and 14th centuries, it was also used as a prison. A medieval foundation has been preserved at the fountain in Platea Castri. The fountain stands where the castle square was once centered and the heart of the Ricetto.
The churches also reveal different phases of construction. The terracotta, three-aisled parish church of Santa Maria Maddalena has a façade reminiscent of the Romanesque style. It probably developed from a single-aisled building dating to the early 14th century. Sant'Antonio Abate is a national monument: a Benedictine cell with an adjoining monastery developed into a late Gothic church, which later received Baroque additions. The foundation of the Convento di Santa Maria di Gesù is dated to either 1456 or 1466. The monastery complex included a cloister, a church, a bell tower and defensive walls three meters high.
The Chiesa del Presepio adds a rural touch. Set among the woods, the church was rebuilt in 1676 on the site of an earlier Romanesque building. Its construction history therefore reaches back beyond the new building to an earlier church.
Discover local history and landscape
The Museo del Territorio Giuseppe “Pinino” Nota is housed in the former Asilo San Luigi. Its collections offer different insights into local history: they include local tools and equipment, a reconstruction of a classroom from the early 20th century, and ornithological specimens. Everyday objects, a historic learning space and natural history exhibits are presented side by side.
A CAI trail passes through Mombaruzzo’s medieval Borgo Castello and continues to the Bosco delle Sorti – La Communa protected area. Typical Pliocene strata are visible along the Rio Secco: yellow-red sands lie above layers of clay. There is a furnished picnic area at the Chiesa del Presepio. Nativity scenes have been set up there since the 19th century, some featuring large figures.
A cycling tour is another of the options described: La Strada del Brachetto starts in Mombaruzzo and runs through vineyards. The municipalities are responsible for maintaining the route and ensuring it is suitable for cycling. Check its condition before setting out rather than assuming it is passable.
Amaretti and wine experiences
Soft amaretti are an artisan-made Piedmontese product and a well-known specialty of Mombaruzzo. Their production is protected by a collective trademark reserved exclusively for producers based in this town. You can also discover this specialty as part of a visit to Distillerie Berta: the experience includes a tour among operating stills, a visit to the museum and the three aging cellars, and a guided tasting of the distillery’s own products with Amaretti di Mombaruzzo.
Tre Secoli’s Walking Tour follows a set schedule. It starts at 9:00 a.m. with pickup at the winery in Mombaruzzo and a welcome drink. At 11:40 a.m., a short factory visit takes place there, with the option to buy wines; this marks the end of the tour. Comparing these stops as you plan your trip can help you choose between a distillery experience with a museum, cellars and tasting, and a winery-focused experience with a set schedule.
