Frinco: Castle, Churches and Countryside
Accommodation in Frinco
Frinco lies in the Asti Monferrato on a small rise to the right of the Versa River. Cultivated fields, vineyards, and forests shape the surrounding area. Local cultural landmarks include a medieval castle and several churches; named stages also pass through the area or offer views of its landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Frinco, these cultural and landscape themes can help you choose a location that suits your interests.
The Castle and the Early History of the Town
Castello di Frinco is a medieval castle in Frinco. It was first mentioned on August 10, 1288, in an agreement concerning the border between Calliano and Guadarabbio. During the 1305 conflict, the castle was considered difficult to capture and was equipped to withstand a prolonged siege. These are two distinct historical references: its early mention in the border agreement and its defensive capabilities during the conflict.
Churches from Different Periods
The Church of San Defendente is in the hamlet of the same name in Frinco. It was built in 1966 to a design by architect Giovanni Bo. In comparison with the medieval Castello, it represents a much later building period. The parish church, Parrocchiale della Natività della Vergine, reopened on April 10, 2025, after being closed for twelve years.
The Romanesque Church of Madonna della Neve is on the border between Castell’Alfero and Frinco. Surrounded by nature, it can be reached by following the route between the two municipalities. Its border location sets it apart from San Defendente, which is in the hamlet of the same name. Together, the churches reflect different historical periods and geographical settings: from the 1966 construction and the dated reopening in 2025 to the Romanesque church on the municipal border.
Landscape and Routes
The first stage offers views of the Versa Valley and Castello di Frinco. The second stage of the Cammini monferrini di Don Bosco passes through the Frinco area. The routes therefore offer different perspectives: one focuses on views of the valley and castle, while the other follows a stage through the town’s territory.
The distance, duration, and difficulty are provided for stage 13 of the Cammini delle Alte Colline Ombrose e delle Colline Chiare: it is 5.90 km long, takes 1 hour and 40 minutes, and is rated easy. The distance and duration provide a specific timeframe, while the difficulty rating offers another point of reference for planning.
