In Castell'alfero, architectural history, local culture and distinctive landmarks come together amid rolling hills. Castello dei Conti Amico, the Museo 'L Ciär and the Church of Madonna della Neve offer different ways to explore the area's history. Traditions such as the Palio di Asti and the Roseto della Sorpresa add their own points of interest. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you are most interested in historic buildings, events or the combination of culture and routes through the landscape.

Castello dei Conti Amico: from military building to residence

The oldest structure from which today's Castello dei Conti Amico developed was built by the free commune of Asti from 1290 onward. In the early 1700s, with the involvement of the Amico family and Benedetto Alfieri, the military building was transformed into an elegant Baroque residence. These two periods tell the story of a transformation: its medieval origins were followed by the representative architecture of the Baroque era.

The Museo 'L Ciär is housed in partially restored underground rooms of the castle. It opened on September 1, 2002. On occasion, rooms in the castle have also been opened for exhibitions, piano concerts and book presentations. The museum, the building's history and these event uses shed light on different cultural aspects of the building.

Roses, characters and local history

In the hamlet of Serra Perno lies the Roseto della Sorpresa, one of Piedmont's historic gardens. The estate includes a 19th-century country house, a garden and a small wooded area on the hillside. The grounds cover about 14,000 square meters; around 500 varieties of botanical and old roses grow in the rose garden.

Another cultural landmark is the Ciabot 'd Gianduja in the hamlet of Callianetto. It is regarded as the birthplace of Gianduja, the Piedmontese character created in 1808 from the imagination of puppeteers Giovan Battista Sales and Gioacchino Bellone. Giovan Battista De Rolandis is also part of local history: he was born in Castell'alfero in 1774 and is considered the creator of the Italian tricolor. These two stories lead from a regional theatrical character to a figure associated with the Italian flag.

Palio, Viviverde and culinary evenings

Through its Palio committee, Castell'alfero takes part in the Palio di Asti. On the first Sunday in September, the event features a parade with performers dressed in medieval costumes, demonstrations by flag throwers and a horse race in which riders compete without saddles. Each year, the Comitato Palio di Castell'alfero presents a changing theme for the historic parade, inspired by Asti's medieval history. As the program may vary, check the latest dates and details before traveling for the event.

Viviverde traditionally takes place in Castell'alfero on April 25. Enogastronomic evenings are also held in June and July in collaboration with local Pro Loco associations; dates and participating organizations may change. Together with the Palio in September, these offer several seasonal occasions to visit. If you would like to plan your stay around a particular event, it is worth checking the latest schedule.

Madonna della Neve and the Cammino Romanico

The Church of Madonna della Neve lies two kilometers from the town center on the ridge of the hills to the right of the Versa River. In the Middle Ages, a branch route of the Via Francigena passed through this location. The Cammino Romanico Castell'alfero leads to the Romanesque church and a nearby picnic area. The two route connections are distinct: one belongs to the area's medieval history, while the other is a route to the church and picnic area.

You can also plan your journey around a specific landmark: Castell'alfero is accessible by private vehicle and lies ten kilometers from the Asti-Est toll booth, in the direction of Casale Monferrato. Between the castle, cultural traditions and the Cammino Romanico, you can choose the focus of your stay according to the subjects that interest you most.
