Discover Garbagna: historic center, churches and walking trails
Accommodation in Garbagna
Garbagna combines a historic townscape with religious buildings, walking trails and an indigenous cherry variety. These highlights can be explored separately on your trip: the center focuses on lanes and architectural history, the walking trails on routes and starting points, and the Bella di Garbagna on local agriculture.
Historic center and castle
The architecture of the historic center is reminiscent of Ligurian villages. Houses stand close together, and characteristic lanes, arches and carved portals shape the townscape. In the center is a large dark stone known locally as “a prega da l'urmu” or “Pietra dell'Olmo.”
Historic buildings include the remains of the Castello di Garbagna: a medieval, austere manor house with a square tower. The combination of the town center and castle ruins offers a tangible point of reference for Garbagna’s architectural history.
Churches and local history
The Oratorio di San Rocco stands in Piazza Doria and dates back to the 16th century. It is the home of an active confraternity. Its members still wear red capes at gatherings and ceremonies.
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is an 18th-century reconstruction, built in place of the original Romanesque parish church dating from the 11th century. It preserves a 17th-century organ considered the oldest in the Diocese of Tortona. The parish archives include parchments and old books from the 10th to 15th centuries, as well as a rare missal from the 7th or 8th century.
The Santuario Madonna del Lago in the hamlet of Lago di Feiga also links local history with tradition: local religious tradition associates its origins with the year 1341 and the conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines.
Walking trails with different starting points
The themed walking trail Il Cammino del Principe Doria passes through a rural agricultural landscape with natural features to discover on foot. Its associated trails, Nos. 123 and 138, are circular routes that start and finish in Garbagna. They run mostly within the municipality and are about 28 kilometers long in total.
Another named trail is the Sentiero Garbagna–Monte Trassa. It starts in Piazza Doria in the town center, at an elevation of 296 meters. The two Cammino trails can be considered circular routes with a stated combined length; the starting point for the Sentiero is located in the town center.
Getting around town
To reach the castle, walk from Piazza P. Doria along Via Castello; the journey takes a little over 15 minutes. The Santuario Madonna del Lago is a little over a 20-minute walk from Piazza Doria; it can also be reached by car via the S.P. 120. The sanctuary is wheelchair accessible.
The historic center can also be reached from the S.P. 120 via Piazza Doria. Designated parking spaces are available there, and access for people with disabilities is always ensured. The different walking times and access options can help you plan visits to the town center and sanctuary as part of your trip.
Bella di Garbagna
Bella di Garbagna is an indigenous cherry variety. Its skin is dark red and its flesh very firm and crisp; its flavor is sweet and lingering. The production area includes Garbagna and all the municipalities of the Val Curone in the Province of Alessandria. The variety is one of the local highlights that broaden the focus beyond architecture and walking trails to agriculture and regional produce.
