Alfiano Natta: Art, History and Routes
Accommodation in Alfiano Natta
Alfiano Natta appeals to travelers with a range of interests: art and architectural history sit alongside routes through woodland and cultivated landscapes. Castello di Razzano and the churches add historical highlights; the routes described here provide specific details for walks and itineraries.
Castello di Razzano and Museo ArteVino
Castello di Razzano was built in 1697 by Giovan Battista Gaetano Natta. Its appearance is considered unusual in the Monferrato area, and its scenic value is regarded as high. Museo ArteVino Razzano opened in October 2009 within Tenuta Castello di Razzano. The castle, built in the late 17th century, and the museum, added later, thus represent different historical points of reference.
The experiences on offer include a visit to Museo ArteVino and the aging cellar, as well as tastings featuring products from the estates. When planning, you can distinguish between the castle’s architectural history and the museum, cellar, and tasting experiences on offer, rather than treating them as a single activity.
Churches, Chapels and Art History
The parish church of San Marziano preserves paintings and works by Guglielmo Caccia and his daughters. Its exposed-brick façade dates to the 18th century. Chiesa di Santa Maria dates to an earlier period: it stands next to Castello di Razzano and is documented from the second half of the 13th century. The two buildings thus represent distinctly different historical periods.
The chapels and churches also each have their own distinctive features. Cappella di San Grato was built in 1886 at the highest point to protect the settlement from lightning and hail. The ruins of the former Chiesa di Santo Spirito, also known as San Spiridione, lie in a wooded area. In Sanico, the rural 18th-century Chiesa di San Pietro stands next to the cemetery. A short path on the edge of Alfiano Natta leads to the rural Chiesetta di San Defendente.
Routes and Landscape
Stage 7 of the Cammini Monferrato Don Bosco covers a 1.8-kilometer stretch from Alfiano Natta to the hamlet of Sanico. In Parco Naturale Ex Cave di Cardona, a route follows a path for about 3 kilometers before heading back toward Alfiano Natta. One route to Alfiano Natta includes a stretch of about 250 meters through woodland; the surrounding landscape includes extensive cultivated areas, historic farmsteads, and small linear settlements.
The distances refer to different sections: the stretch between Alfiano Natta and Sanico, a path in the nature park, and a section through woodland. They should therefore not be read as one combined total distance. The landscape details add to the route information, highlighting the transition between woodland, cultivated areas, farmsteads, and small settlements.
Viewpoints and Orientation
The Belvedere di Alfiano Natta, accessible via Strada San Defendente, has a sign identifying villages in the hills opposite, in the province of Asti. This gives the viewpoint a specific orientation focus. Panchina Gigante No. 148 is another named spot: it is located at Strada Gessi 2 in the hamlet of Casarello in Alfiano Natta and is part of the Big Bench Community Project.
A simple comparison can help you choose your focus: the castle, museum, and churches offer art and architectural history, while the route information gives details about distances, woodland, and the cultivated landscape. This lets you plan according to whether you are more interested in historic places or the routes described here.
