Accommodation in Pecetto
Pecetto di Valenza lies on a hill spur on the eastern edge of the lower Monferrato. Baroque architecture, Roman remains and the natural landscape of Bric Montariolo give the town its varied character. If you are planning a trip to Pecetto, these themes offer a place to start: they range from a national monument in the town centre to a signposted circular trail and a protected area where wild orchids grow.
Location and landscape
The hill spur slopes down towards the right bank of the Po. A little downstream, the Tanaro flows into the Po. This location on the edge of the lower Monferrato forms the scenic setting for a town whose attractions are connected both to its history and to the surrounding countryside.
The area’s geology is another distinctive feature: Tripoli, a sedimentary rock, is exposed near Pecetto. It formed through the slow deposition of the shells of microscopic foraminifera and diatoms. The rock’s name therefore represents a very long formation process, distinct from the more recent histories of the town and its buildings.
Orchids and trails at Bric Montariolo
The protected area of Bric Montariolo lies mostly within the municipality of Pecetto di Valenza. The nature reserve was established primarily to protect the diversity of orchids found there; 13 species of wild orchid have been recorded. Spring is recommended for the Tra le orchidee di Bric Montariolo circular trail, as this is when the orchids bloom.
The trail is an easy hike signposted by the CAI. It starts in Pecetto’s historic centre and follows marker 627 to the town’s sports facilities. For those choosing routes based on their directions, it has a clearly described starting point in the centre and a named destination. Trail conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Another described route is the Sentiero Pecetto - Bric Montalbano. It starts at the parish church, follows Via Menada to the valley road and, after an approximately 700-metre stretch on asphalt, continues along an unpaved uphill path. From the summit of Bric Montariolo, the view extends across the Po Plain from the Apennines to the Alps. La Rocca, on the upper edge of town, preserves the remains of defensive walls and includes a small botanical garden featuring plants of the Monferrato.
Local history and architecture
The Church of Santa Maria is a national monument in the Lombard Baroque style and was built in 1739. A marble monument to Giuseppe Borsalino stands in the central square. Erected in 1920, it was created by the sculptor Luigi Contratti. The two buildings reflect different historical periods: the 18th-century parish church and a monument from the early 20th century.
Pecetto is identified with the ancient Roman settlement of Pecetum Valentinum. Roman wall remains have also been found in the surrounding area, attributed to a large villa or agricultural complex. Roman paving came to light in the hamlet of Pellizzari; it may have belonged to a branch of the Via Giulia, which ran from Asti to Valenza. The various finds point to Roman remains, though the connection between the paving and the Via Giulia remains a possibility.
Later periods are also reflected in the buildings. The ruins of a tower are all that remain of the former feudal castle. The Certosa displays Renaissance architecture, with a broad portico supported by Tuscan granite columns. Palazzo De Questore dates from the 17th century and is associated with the good taste of Pecetto families of earlier times.
Culture and learning
The Biblioteca civica Giuseppe Borsalino holds books, magazines and multimedia resources. As a cultural centre, it hosts events, conferences, book presentations and activities for children and adults. The fossil exhibition introduces visitors to palaeontology through educational panels, staged displays and dioramas. Alongside the history of its buildings and town, Pecetto also offers a lively community cultural scene and natural history attractions.
