Discover Guazzolo
Accommodation in Guazzolo
Guazzolo brings together local church history, a designated hiking stage and several viewpoints. These themes offer different starting points for planning your trip: the parish of Santissimo Nome di Maria features both in a current diocesan listing and in a historical period; a specifically named stage of the Cammino Monferrato Don Bosco leads to Guazzolo. There is also a memorial park and views of several named destinations. Depending on your interests, you can explore Guazzolo through its architectural history, landscape or outdoor activities.
Parish and Architectural History
The Diocese of Casale Monferrato lists the parish of Santissimo Nome di Maria in Guazzolo di Castelletto Merli. Historical records for the parish cover the period from 1517 to 1986. The information reflects different time frames: a current diocesan listing and historical records. The façade of the church of Santissimo Nome di Maria has a raised central section and two lower, convex-curved side wings. The bell tower is 24 metres high and leans by 48 centimetres. The former parish church of San Vincenzo stood in the cemetery. The town’s history therefore has several church-related connections: the parish of Santissimo Nome di Maria and the history of San Vincenzo.
Memorial Sites and Viewpoints
The Parco della Rimembranza occupies the site of the former parish church and contains a monument honouring the Alpini. Another glimpse into local history is offered by the Cassone-Dell’Aglio family tomb in the cemetery of Guazzolo; its distinctive pointed roof is a striking architectural detail. The cemetery also offers views of Castello Cavallero in Ponzano and the Sacro Monte di Crea. Alongside the view of Tenuta Masone, there is a rare view of the Maritime Alps. Architectural form and landscape views can thus be found side by side in the same place. Via Masone in Guazzolo is also designated as a viewpoint. Tenuta Masone is designated for exterior viewing.
Hiking and Information for Cyclists
Stage 7 of the Cammino Monferrato Don Bosco covers a 7.3-kilometre stretch from Crea via Ponzano and Castelletto Merli to Guazzolo. The distance and named places give the hike a clearly defined route. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current route and conditions.
Another route story dates back to 1861: during Don Bosco’s walk with the young people, the route passed through Guazzolo and continued to Alfiano Natta and the Santuario di Crea. The two route descriptions differ in both timing and course: Stage 7 runs from Crea to Guazzolo, while the historical route continued from there to Alfiano Natta and the Santuario di Crea.
The fountain known as the “fontana del ciclista” is located in Piazza Querce Rossi. It is a local landmark of interest to anyone interested in cycling facilities. If you plan to visit, check the fountain’s condition and accessibility beforehand.
