Rocchetta Ligure offers two distinct starting points for planning a trip: cultural history centered on Palazzo Spinola and a hike through woodland and rocky terrain. The Museo d’Arte Sacra, the Parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio Abate, Porta Genova and the fountain each add a different element to the historic townscape. I sentieri del timo adds a specific route that crosses the Sisola stream and passes through woodland and puddingstone terrain.

Cultural History Around Palazzo Spinola

The Museo d’Arte Sacra was inaugurated in 2009 and is housed as a permanent exhibition in two rooms on the piano nobile of Palazzo Spinola. As an off-site museum department, it is part of the Museo diocesano di Tortona. This places the museum in the context of both sacred art and its institutional connection to Tortona. The term piano nobile refers to the principal reception floor of a palazzo; the exhibition is therefore located in a specific part of Palazzo Spinola.

Buildings shape the town beyond the museum, too. The Parrocchiale di Sant’Antonio Abate stands in the center of Rocchetta Ligure, on a spacious church square on a rise opposite Palazzo Spinola. Porta Genova is the only surviving one of two historic entrance gates and offers another glimpse into the town’s history. In front of the palazzo stands the fountain, designed as a nymphaeum: above a stone basin is a marble mask, with water flowing from its mouth. These features present different architectural accents—a church and church square, a surviving gate and an ornate fountain. Those interested in architecture can take in their different forms: the church’s position on the rise, the historic entrance gate and the design of the fountain.

Rocchetta Ligure’s cultural profile also includes a collection and preservation of historical partisan documents, a specialist library with publications on the Resistenza, and a permanent collection of direct testimonies. Documents, specialist literature and testimonies are different types of material and offer interested visitors various ways to explore the Resistenza. Together with the Museo d’Arte Sacra, they provide a broader cultural and historical picture, with sacred art and commemorative collections as distinct themes.

Hiking and Landscape

I sentieri del timo starts at the sports ground in the hamlet of Frain in Rocchetta Ligure. From there, the circular route crosses the Sisola stream and then runs through woodland and puddingstone terrain. On slopes covered with oak and chestnut trees, the trail offers panoramic views across the upper Val Borbera. The stream crossing, woodland, rocky terrain and views make this a different kind of trip from visiting the buildings and museum department. The CAI trail description dates from January 2009. Check the condition of the trail and the Sisola crossing locally.
