Montaldo Bormida lies in the hills of the Upper Monferrato, between the Orba Valley and the lower Bormida Valley. The landscape, hiking trails and historic buildings offer different themes for a stay.

Landscape and Trails

Parco Dotto is a garden dating from the early years of the 20th century. Its viewing terrace offers views over the Rio Stanavazzo valley and towards the Apennines. The garden, valley and mountain backdrop give the place a distinct landscape setting; the Percorso Verde “Avsein au rian” also starts here.

This trail connects Montaldo Bormida with Trisobbio. It starts in Parco Dotto and ends at the Piscine di Trisobbio. The Cascina Quaglia e Budello loop offers a different set of features: it leads to Cascina Quaglia, a viewpoint overlooking the small valleys southwest of Montaldo Bormida. A downhill section passes through a wood of hazelnut, poplar and wild cherry trees to the hamlet of Scopitta.

The Percorso Praielle stands out for its flat route between cultivated fields, vineyards and wooded areas. It follows the valley path connecting Carpeneto with Montaldo Bormida. The routes can therefore be compared by their specific features: the start in the park and finish at the Piscine di Trisobbio, the viewpoint and wooded section on the loop, and the flat stretch through cultivated countryside on the Percorso Praielle.

Buildings and History

The Chiesa parrocchiale di San Michele Arcangelo was built starting in 1686. Highlights of the Oratorio della S.S. Annunziata e di San Rocco include a stone architrave bearing the date 1600 and a finely crafted 18th-century stucco altar. Palazzo Schiavina was built in 1673 and is well preserved. These dates refer to different buildings and details: the date on the Oratorio is on the architrave, while 1673 is the year Palazzo Schiavina was built and construction of the church began in 1686.

The Oratorio’s furnishings add to this timeline: the stucco altar dates from a later century than the date on the architrave. Those interested in architectural history can consider individual building elements and furnishings as distinct aspects, alongside the age of a building.

Other Things to Do Locally

Montaldo Bormida’s Centro sportivo has tennis courts, a football pitch for seven- or eleven-a-side games, a playground and an adjoining dog area. The facility thus combines sports areas with a playground and a separate area for dogs—another kind of local attraction, distinct from the landscape-focused trails.

Experiences and educational activities are available at the Azienda Agricola Cascina del Vento. If you would like to include this option in your plans, check specific dates in advance. This lets you connect your interests in the landscape, architectural history or a farm experience with the themes described in Montaldo Bormida.
