Capriata D'orba: History, Landscape and Local Traditions
Accommodation in Capriata D'orba
Capriata D'orba brings together sacred architecture, medieval traces, a landscape of vineyards and gentle hills, and local traditions. It also offers wine tastings, a destination for evening walks, and events held on different dates.
Churches and Historical Traces
The parish church of San Pietro e Paolo and Madonna del Rosario is an ancient Doric building with three naves and a Tuscan-style façade. The three naves define the church interior; the Tuscan style characterizes the façade. Inside is a polished black altar made of African marble. It was initially dedicated to the Virgin Mary and later to Madonna del Rosario.
The visible ruins of the Torre del Castel Vecchio are the remains of an early medieval fortification that was probably older than the settlement. A tall, square tower with unusually thick walls has survived. The Oratorio della Santissima Annunziata is just a few steps from the tower.
The Casaccia di San Michele, considered the oldest in the area, was already in existence in 1494. In the lower part of Capriata D'orba stands a historic mill, first documented in 1186. The mill’s first documentary mention predates the year in which the Casaccia was already in existence by 308 years.
Landscape and Walks
Capriata D'orba lies in the valley of the Torrente Orba; farmland, vineyards and gentle hills shape the landscape. The Torrente Orba nature reserve includes the municipality of Capriata D'orba, among others. Capriata D'orba is also one of the eleven municipalities in the Gavi DOCG appellation.
The Chapel of San Rocco stands at the end of a tree-lined avenue and is a destination for evening walks. Unlike the church and ruins, the walk itself is the focus here: the chapel is a named endpoint in the local landscape.
Wine Tastings and Local Traditions
Sassaia offers wine tastings in Capriata D'orba, either in the tasting room or in the vineyard. Tastings require an appointment by email; confirm the date in advance if you plan to include a tasting in your itinerary.
Tamburello is also part of the local culture: it remains a sporting tradition that engages players and spectators alike. Alongside the buildings, this community-based sporting tradition is another distinct aspect of local life.
Festivals and Event Dates
Two dates offer a guide to the month of July: the traditional Fiera Patronale di San Pietro takes place on the first Sunday in July, while the Trattorata is associated with the last Sunday of the month. The Trattorata at Parco dell'Allea includes an exhibition of historic tractors and ploughing demonstrations.
The Festa delle lasagne con stubiaroi is associated with a date in late June in Capriata D'orba. A living nativity scene has been recorded for Christmas Eve. About 200 costumed participants portrayed traditional occupations, many of which have since disappeared. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates and program for your travel year.
