Ottiglio Between Castle, Tuff and Wine
Accommodation in Ottiglio
If you’re looking for a hotel in Ottiglio, it helps to consider the different sides of the town: its hilly landscape, buildings with a history of their own, a hiking trail through the woods, and offerings related to wine and ceramics. These themes give you concrete points of reference to help decide whether Ottiglio suits the focus of your stay.
Hills, Tuff and Vines
Ottiglio’s houses are clustered on a hill and have tuff-stone façades. Ottiglio Castle is also built of tuff and brick. After the quarries closed, the hills around the town were replanted with vines. Both stone quarrying and the return of winegrowing are therefore part of the history of the surrounding hills.
Castle, Church and Chapel
The castle survived the wars that shook the Monferrato area in the 17th century. Its construction in brick and tuff offers another perspective on the historic building. The Church of San Germano marks a later phase of construction: work began in 1761.
The interior of San Germano is richly decorated and includes high-quality frescoes, including frescoes in the choir. The church is chosen as a venue for classical music concerts. If you’re considering attending a concert, check the specific event dates before your trip.
San Michele offers a different historical perspective: the chapel, set in a scenic location, was relocated in 1968 to protect it from damage caused by quarrying. While San Germano is associated with its construction period and frescoes, San Michele’s history also includes its relocation and the reason for protecting it.
Hiking Trail and Landscape
The Sentiero La Valle dei Frati starts on Via Mazza in central Ottiglio. It follows a comfortable, level track through the woods. Numerous flowers bloom there in spring, and in some places there are views of the Valle dei Frati below. The flowers lend a seasonal touch, while the woods and views are other features of the trail.
The Grotte dei Saraceni near Moleto open into a hollow in the Valle dei Guaraldi, below the high hill of San Germano. The caves are therefore in the Valle dei Guaraldi, while the hiking trail offers views of the Valle dei Frati. The two valleys have different names and provide distinct landscape reference points.
Wine and Ceramics
Wine tastings and wine sales are available at Infernot Vinicea in Ottiglio. Infernot della maga Alcina Terra e Fuoco has a ceramics workshop, as well as an exhibition and sales. Vinicea focuses on wine, while Terra e Fuoco focuses on ceramics—two different options to consider when planning your visit. Check the arrangements at both places before you arrive.
