Bosio Between Nature and Commemorative Culture
Accommodation in Bosio
Bosio offers two distinct perspectives for planning a trip: trails through a species-rich landscape and places where regional history and remembrance are brought to life. Highlights include the Capanne di Marcarolo Nature Park, several hiking trails, and the Ecomuseo di Cascina Moglioni and Benedicta. When looking for a hotel in Bosio, you can decide as you plan your trip whether to focus more on nature and outdoor activities or on culture and history.
Nature Park and Hiking Trails
The Capanne di Marcarolo Nature Park was the first protected area established by the Piedmont Region in the Apennines. Within its relatively small area of about 8,200 hectares, typical Alpine plant species and species of the Mediterranean environment can be found. The park’s endemic species include Viola bertolonii, Cerastium utriense and Aquilegia ophiolithica. The area is also important for bird migration and is a wolf dispersal area in the Piedmontese Apennines. Its natural features range from unusual plant species to migration patterns and the spread of wolves.
Bosio has several hiking trails along old paths through nature rich in animal and plant life. Capanne di Marcarolo is a hamlet in the municipality of Bosio. The former primary school building now houses the park headquarters and visitor center; trail signs mark the starting points of the routes in Capanne.
An easy trail with scenic views initially follows a forest track along the northern slope of Costa Lavezzara, through beech and oak woods. On the second section, between Cascina Alberghi and Lago Bruno, the path runs mainly through open pastureland. The route description thus presents two contrasting landscapes in succession: woodland first, followed by open pastureland.
Cultural Sites and Regional History
The Ecomuseo di Cascina Moglioni is a cultural and educational center in Capanne di Marcarolo. It displays traditional farming tools and offers a multimedia tour introducing visitors to the local landscape and region. The two features have different emphases: the tools illustrate agricultural equipment, while the tour explores the landscape and regional context. The ecomuseum also organizes theater and educational workshops, photography exhibitions, and film screenings about local agricultural activities.
Another focus is the remembrance of the Benedicta massacre. The Anello della pace begins at the ruins of Benedicta and follows an educational trail with information panels about the history of the massacre, as well as peace, resistance and remembrance. Restoration and conservation work is being carried out on the ruins of the former Benedictine monastery, the site of the massacre, and has led to the creation of the Sacrario dei Martiri della Benedicta. A commemorative event is held every year to remember the Benedicta massacre.
The Anello della pace and the trail along Costa Lavezzara offer different themes: the woodland and pastureland shape the route there, while the panels provide the historical context here. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose whether you are more interested in a route through varied landscapes or a circular trail focused on history and remembrance.
Chapel and Mining History
The small Madonna di Caravaggio chapel occupies a scenic location on Monte Tobbio at an elevation of 1,092 m. It preserves 19th-century frescoes by various painters. This makes it another cultural landmark alongside the ecomuseum and the Benedicta memorial sites.
The area’s history also includes its former gold mining: gold mines once operated in the Monte Ovile and Ferriere area. The surviving remains include tunnels with gold-bearing quartz veins. These historical traces add a geological and mining-history dimension to the themes of nature, agriculture and commemorative culture.
