Novi Ligure offers several clearly distinct cultural themes to help you plan your trip: ecclesiastical and medieval architectural history, theatre, a collection devoted to beekeeping, and a museum on the history of cycling. If you choose the city for a stay, these themes can help you organise your interests. The historic buildings reflect different centuries, while the two museums each focus on a specific subject. This makes it possible to decide in advance whether you would rather explore architectural history or include themed collections in your travel plans.

Architectural History and Park Setting

The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta was founded in the 13th century and extensively remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its architectural history thus combines a medieval foundation with significant later changes. If you choose historic places based on their historical periods, the Collegiata offers a clear point of interest spanning several centuries.

The Torre del Castello is evidence of a complex castle complex whose origins date back to the 10th century. The castle’s square tower was built by the people of Tortona in 1233. These two dates answer different questions: the first points to the origins of the complex, while the second gives the construction year of a specific tower. The Torre del Castello stands in a park laid out by Gerolamo Durazzo towards the end of the 18th century.

Museums of Beekeeping and Cycling History

The Museo dell’Apicoltura is located in the Maglietto in the hamlet of Merella in Novi Ligure and is the first beekeeping museum in Piedmont. Its collection includes beehives, traditional log hives, feeding equipment, honey extractors and presses, as well as wax sculptures, beekeeping journals, bee-related postage stamps, and numerous themed objects. Practical beekeeping equipment sits alongside written and artistic references to the subject in this collection. In contrast to the Museo dei Campionissimi, its focus is on beekeeping and its various groups of objects.

The Museo dei Campionissimi is housed in a carefully restored, disused industrial complex. A long central track tells the history of the bicycle through important exhibits, from the draisine to titanium prototypes. This range places early bicycle forms and later technological developments in a historical context. The museum is accessible to visitors with disabilities; if you have specific access requirements, check the arrangements for visiting before your trip.

Theatre History and Marionettes

The Teatro Romualdo Marenco was inaugurated in Novi on 2 October 1839 as the Teatro Carlo Alberto. The Ridotto houses a private collection of 29 marionettes, which the Pallavicini family donated to the city of Novi. The inauguration date and the number of marionettes highlight two different aspects of the venue: its theatrical history and a clearly defined collection. If you would like to see the marionettes, check in advance when and under what conditions a visit is possible.
