Discover Valenza
Accommodation in Valenza
Explore Valenza through three themes: goldsmithing, religious heritage and landscape. These distinct themes provide a practical framework for planning your trip when looking for a hotel in Valenza.
Goldsmithing and MOD
Valenza is one of the world’s leading production centres for high-quality jewellery and goldsmithing. Its integrated production chain includes design, modelling, stone setting, polishing and quality control. These stages often take place within the same area. This means you can explore goldsmithing not only through the finished piece of jewellery, but also through the various stages of its creation.
As a concept, the MOD – Museo dell’Oreficeria Diffuso – is designed to tell the story of Valenza’s historical identity through several physical and virtual locations, which are intended to be linked by a themed route. The MOD exhibition in the historic San Domenico complex, which formerly housed the Carducci primary school, features a reconstruction of an early 20th-century goldsmith’s workshop. The first three MOD locations are currently on display in Valenza’s historic centre.
Cathedral and religious art
The Duomo di Santa Maria Maggiore’s present architectural form dates back to a reconstruction decided upon in the early 17th century and entrusted to the architect Paolo Falcone of Lugano. The Duomo houses the painting Madonna del Rosario by Guglielmo Caccia, known as Il Moncalvo. Dating from 1620, it is a distinctive art-historical landmark in the cathedral’s history.
The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo preserves paintings, sculptures, sacred furnishings, liturgical vestments and liturgical objects from the cathedral. The collection is housed in the church sacristy; visits are available on request. Check the arrangements before visiting.
Landscape and nature reserve
The Valenza area includes three important landscape types: the Po, rice-growing areas and hills. These distinct landscape categories add a natural perspective to the cultural themes without needing to be combined into a single landscape.
The Riserva naturale della Garzaia di Valenza was established in 1979 by Regional Law No. 51. Among the region’s currently active heron colonies, it is the only one in an exclusively marshland habitat. The Cascina Belvedere visitor centre is located near the Valenza Bridge and is the site of the nature reserve. From there, guided walking or cycling visits can be arranged with park rangers and nature guides.
For planning purposes, the next steps differ: check the current configuration of the MOD locations, enquire about an appointment to visit the collection, and arrange guided visits in advance. This will help you assess the cultural highlights and the option of a guided nature visit according to their respective arrangements.
