Fabbrica Curone: Hiking, Heritage and Caldirola
Accommodation in Fabbrica Curone
Fabbrica Curone’s location makes it ideal for trekking, walking, horseback riding, mountain biking and skiing; numerous trails are marked. There are also museums, the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta and winter sports facilities in Caldirola. When planning a trip, you can choose from marked routes, mountain scenery and insights into rural history.
Hiking: Compare routes and landscapes
The Sentiero Fabbrica Curone–Selvapiana starts in town, opposite the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta. It initially follows a paved road, then continues along an unpaved path marked CAI 104. The route is classified as an E-grade trail, is 6.93 kilometres long and is listed as taking two hours to walk.
A comparison with the Sentiero Caldirola–Monte Ebro reveals different distances and walking times: this trail is also rated E, but is 4.77 kilometres long, with a listed walking time of two and a half hours. So it is shorter, while the recorded walking time is longer. Along this route, you reach Monte Ebro at an altitude of 1,700 metres. On a clear day, the summit offers a 360-degree panorama of the Alps and the Ligurian Sea.
The Sentiero Serra del Monte–Fabbrica Curone offers a different kind of scenery. It descends along a scenic ridge trail between downy oaks, manna ash and black pines towards Fabbrica Curone. Some sections are steep. In addition to the specific distances and times given for the other trails, this route has its own highlights: its ridge-top course and vegetation.
Museums and the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Lunassi” illustrates historical rural life in the mountains through tools, implements, machinery, documents and other objects. It is divided into 26 sections and has more than 600 exhibits, of which only about half are currently on display. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Morigliassi” covers around 300 square metres and holds more than 2,000 original objects, including several rare items.
The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta continues to be used for religious purposes and still serves as a parish church. It dates from the 12th or 13th century and has three aisles. Above the entrance portal is a bas-relief in local stone featuring complex zoomorphic symbolism. The Pieve is also a specific landmark on the Sentiero Fabbrica Curone–Selvapiana: the trail starts opposite it.
In the hamlet of Lunassi, the Circolo Lunassese regularly demonstrates the traditional method of making charcoal, known in Italian as “carbonaia.” Demonstrations take place regularly; check the timing locally before your visit.
Caldirola: Bike Park and Winter Sports
The Caldirola Bike Park has eleven trails on the slopes of Monte GropĂ and Monte Giarolo, accessible by chairlift. The trails comprise four downhill, three freeride, three all-mountain and one cross-country route. Described features include jumps of varying difficulty, bypass options for less experienced riders, berms and technically demanding sections.
The chairlift runs from the village of La Gioia, at an altitude of 1,110 metres in the municipality of Fabbrica Curone, to Monte GropĂ at 1,446 metres. It operates seasonally; Bike Park operating conditions may vary. Check them before including the chairlift in your plans.
Caldirola has four downhill ski runs, including a practice area for beginners, as well as a cross-country ski trail on the slopes of Monte GropĂ . Caldirola is the only leisure resort equipped for winter sports in the province of Alessandria. Winter sports facilities operate seasonally, so it is worth checking conditions before your trip.
