Arquata Scrivia Between History and Landscape
Accommodation in Arquata Scrivia
When looking for a hotel in Arquata Scrivia, it helps to have a clear idea of what you want from your trip: the town combines medieval architecture and church art with a loop trail, a striking tree, and distinctive landscapes. Consider whether you want to focus your stay on history and culture, walk a section of a route, or take in natural scenery.
Stonework and Church Art
Stone portals dating from the 13th to 15th centuries have been preserved on Via Interiore. The Parrocchia di S. Giacomo has three naves separated by sandstone pillars; the sandstone comes from quarries in Arquata. A nave is a long, lengthwise section of a church; together, the three naves shape the church’s interior.
Construction of the crypt in the Parrocchia began in 1633. Frescoes depict themes from the history of salvation, including the Annunciation, the Passion of Jesus Christ, and the Resurrection. The frescoes are attributed to Giovanni Battista Carlone or Lazzaro Tavarone.
Traces of History
The oldest document mentioning the existence of Pozzo Barocco dates from 1598. The year refers to the written mention, not the construction date. Its architectural features are associated with the visual culture of the early Ligurian Baroque. Chiesa di S. Antonio adds a later date to the town’s history: it was ceremonially reopened on Sunday, January 16, 2005.
Loop Trail, Stage, and Landscape
The loop trail in the Montaldero area includes the Strada dei Soldati. Along it, distinctive stone structures can be seen as evidence of an old local stoneworking tradition. The loop also passes the ruins of a 13th-century castle and offers wide panoramic views. This trail brings together traces of craftsmanship, medieval remains, and expansive scenery.
The Cammino PiemonteSud is a different kind of walk: Arquata Scrivia is the endpoint of its seventh stage from Castel dé Ratti. These offer different hiking options for your plans: a local loop in the Montaldero area, or Arquata Scrivia as the destination of a named stage.
The road to Sottovalle offers views of Calanchi formations in a barren, rugged landscape with a moonlit appearance. In Rigoroso stands the Leccio di Rigoroso, a monumental holm oak, a tree species that is rare in the area. The tree has a circumference of about four meters and is 15 meters tall.
More Cultural Highlights
The municipal Parco Mairano is a sensory park with fragrant steps, aromatic seating, and music areas. Fragrance, seating, and sound offer distinct sensory experiences here.
