Spinetta Marengo is a destination for anyone interested in the Battle of Marengo, its commemorative culture, and the landscape of the historic battlefield. The Marengo Museum, several memorials, and a large park offer different ways to explore the area’s history. You can also enjoy walks through the surrounding meadows and guided tours of a farm. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus primarily on the history of the battle, the monuments and architecture, or the landscape.

Marengo Museum and Villa Delavo

The Marengo Museum is housed in Villa Delavo, near the village of Marengo and in the center of the battlefield. It tells the story of the Italian campaign of 1800 and the Battle of Marengo. Videos, maps, and graphic works convey the events. Weapons and other objects are displayed in cases; the exhibition also includes mannequins in historical uniforms and film footage. The different media complement one another: maps and graphics illustrate historical contexts, while the objects and uniforms offer further concrete insights into the history of the battle.

Villa Delavo itself also adds an artistic dimension to the visit. Its exterior features perspective decorations by the Lombard master Gabetta, while the interior is decorated by Paolo Maggi. The museum’s historical subject and the building’s design thus sit side by side. Anyone interested in cultural history can explore both the events of 1800 and the villa’s architectural and decorative details while learning about Marengo.

Monuments and Memorial Sites

The pyramid erected in 2009 by Alex Donadio is an unusual monument. Made of triangular cast-iron tiles, it commemorates the glory of victory and the soldiers who fell in battle, especially General Desaix. Another landmark in the history of remembrance is the memorial column topped with a bronze eagle in front of the museum. It was erected in 1801, removed by the Austrians after Napoleon’s fall, and returned to its original location in 1918.

The park of the Marengo monumental complex also contains an ossuary dedicated to the heroes of Marengo and a bust of General Louis Charles Antoine Desaix. The medieval Torre degli Stortiglioni adds an older layer of local history to these memorials: it was built by the Stortiglioni family in the ancient settlement of Marengo. In popular tradition, the tower is associated with the Lombard queen Theodelinda. It is visible from the park of the Marengo Museum.

Park, Plane Tree, and Walks

The Marengo monumental complex includes a 55,000-square-meter park with centuries-old trees. The Albero di Napoleone offers a different scale: this historic plane tree stands on Via Marengo, about 900 meters west of the Marengo Museum. It is over 200 years old and approximately 40 meters tall. The landscape can therefore be explored both as an expansive park and through a single, striking tree.

The meadows around Spinetta Marengo, in the area of the historic battlefield, are recommended for walks. For those looking to combine local history with time outdoors, they offer a landscape perspective on Marengo alongside the museum, villa, and memorials. Free parking for cars is available next to the museum entrance.

More Local Experiences

La Pederbona offers guided tours of its livestock operation in Spinetta Marengo aboard the Peddy Express. Another connection to regional history is the “Napoleon & the UNESCO Monferrato” offer: during its run from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026, it includes a tasting of “Pollo alla Marengo” on the day of your visit. The dish must be ordered.

Events have also occasionally revisited the history of the battlefield. At a reenactment in June 2021, around 100 performers brought the events surrounding Villa Delavo, its park, and the surrounding fields in Spinetta Marengo back to life. In 2025, a series of events featuring historical reenactments and performances was held in Spinetta Marengo to mark the 225th anniversary of the Napoleonic battle. The museum and monuments offer a way to explore local history, while the park and meadows provide a focus on the landscape.
