If you are looking for hotels in Ponzone and weighing cultural history against outdoor activities when choosing where to stay, you will find several clearly distinct themes: a parish church with Baroque furnishings, a museum of sacred art, memorial sites commemorating the Resistance, and several trails through different landscapes. Local products also offer a culinary point of interest. You can plan your trip around whether architectural history, hiking, remembrance, or regional specialities are most important to you.

Sacred Architecture and Art

Construction of the Chiesa Parrocchiale in Ponzone began in 1577, and it was consecrated in 1627; five decades separate the start of construction from its consecration. The church has three naves. Its main altar is Baroque, made of black Bardiglio marble and inlaid with white and yellow marble. This brings together a clearly dated history, a three-nave layout, and specific materials in a single building.

The Museo di arte sacra is housed in the Oratorio del Santo Suffragio. It contains polychrome wooden statues dating from the 15th to the 16th century. Its most valuable work is a wooden processional float by Antonio Maria Maragliano. It depicts a vision of the Evangelist John on the island of Patmos. The polychrome figures and this individual work, with its precisely identified subject, offer different points of interest for those interested in cultural history.

Memorial Sites and Sacred History

The Santuario della Pieve was built before the year 1000 and extensively renovated in 1694, effectively being rebuilt. Its early origins and extensive renovation mark distinct phases in its history. Paths and squares around the Santuario lead to a distinctive Stations of the Cross on a hillside. Here, a long building history meets a specific description of the site on the slope.

The Sacrario di Piancastagna focuses on a different historical theme. The Resistance memorial was built around the grave of partisan commander Domenico Lanza and commemorates people and episodes from the Resistance between the Acquese and Ovadese areas. It is also the starting point for the “I sentieri della Libertà” walking trails. Unlike churches and sacred art collections, this site focuses on remembrance of the Resistance.

Walking Trails with Different Highlights

The Sentiero Cartosio - Ponzone passes through cultivated land and forests, with panoramic views along the way. It then reaches the first houses of Ponzone and continues to the village square. The trail therefore combines a description of the landscape with a specific destination in the village. The Sentiero Anello dei Gorrei offers a different landscape: in an open setting, tree heath, juniper, downy oaks, and red rocks shape a landscape that at times resembles the surface of the moon. Vegetation and trail conditions may vary seasonally. The comparison is therefore between the route described as leading to the village square and an open landscape shaped by rocks and plants.

The Sentiero Piancastagna - Bricco - Pessina - Pianazzi – Moretti can be travelled on foot or on horseback; long sections are also suitable for mountain bikes. Check trail conditions locally. The Sentiero Anello dei Pianazzi is different: it passes through chestnut woods, rocky ridges, meadows, and a pine forest. One section crosses rocks that can become slippery in bad weather; the trail is suitable for experienced hikers. The first trail stands out for its stated modes of travel, while the second is distinguished by its terrain and the note about the hiking experience required.

The Sentiero Anello di Bric Berton is a loop trail through the woods around the Bric Berton hill, on the border between Piedmont and Liguria. Its description highlights the loop route, the forest, and its location on the border.

Local Specialities

Local specialities also offer different culinary points of interest. Ponzone is a production area for Filetto baciato: this pure pork salami has a distinctive centre of salted fillet and is cured at an altitude of 750 metres. Local products also include goat’s cheese. The description of Filetto baciato focuses on the meat and filling, while that of the cheese specifies the milk used.
