Accommodation in Sarezzano
Sarezzano is located in the Tortona Hills, between the Grue Valley and the hills that slope down towards the plain. Cultural history, wine and landscape give the town a range of different facets. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Sarezzano, these themes can help you get a sense of the destination’s character.
Romanesque architecture and local history
Sarezzano’s oldest houses are grouped at the foot of the hill where the castle of the feudal lords Guidobono Garofoli once stood. On the hilltop is the Parrocchiale dei Santi Ruffino e Venanzio. It stands on the site of the former castle and is considered an important example of Romanesque architecture. The townscape and building history come together here: the hill is associated with both the former castle and an important church.
The church on Il Castello is also linked to the history of the Codex Purpureus Sarzanensis. The Gospel book, dating from the 5th to 6th centuries, was found in 1585 in the Romanesque church, along with the remains of the patron saints Ruffino and Venanzio. The Codex Sarzanensis comes from the parish of Sarezzano; some of its pages are on display at the Diocesan Museum in Tortona. These two points offer insight into local tradition and Sarezzano’s connection to an important ancient Gospel book.
Another example of early architecture can be found in the ancient Cappella di San Ruffino in the hamlet of the same name, where valuable early medieval friezes are set into the structure. The Roman villa of the Quinzi family was also located in Valle Sant’Innocenzo. These places complement the Romanesque church with further historical and art-historical connections.
Hills, views and trails
From the Il Castello hilltop above Sarezzano and nearby Montegualdone, the view stretches far across the surrounding area. The town’s setting between the Grue Valley and the hills sloping down towards the plain also shapes its landscape. In the hamlet of Rocca Grue stands a centuries-old oak whose leaves remain green throughout the year.
Those interested in a hiking route can take the Sentiero del Gambera, a scenic circular trail through the areas of Tortona, Sarezzano and Villaromagnano. The viewpoints and the route offer different ways to experience the hilly landscape as part of a trip.
Wine and local tastings
Wine is another part of the local profile. By advance reservation, Claudio Mariotto offers a tasting of the winery’s entire wine production. Tastings of Timorasso wines accompanied by typical local cured meats and cheeses are also available by advance reservation. Reservations are part of planning for these offerings.
Claudio Mariotto’s vineyards are located between Vho and Sarezzano, at an altitude of 250 to 300 metres above sea level. The Timorasso vineyard of Vigneti Fontanalbina lies at an altitude of 320 metres; its soils are rich in limestone and gravel, and it faces southeast. The Mutti winery in Sarezzano manages 15 hectares of specialised vineyards and works with Timorasso, Cortese, Barbera, Croatina and Freisa. These details show different facets of local winegrowing without conflating the individual producers.
The more recent history of winegrowing is also part of the story: Andrea Mutti of Andrea Mutti Azienda Agricola was among the first winemakers to follow Walter Massa in rediscovering the Timorasso grape variety. Together with the grape varieties and vineyards described above, this offers insight into the importance of Timorasso to the area.
