Discover Murisengo
Accommodation in Murisengo
Murisengo has an old, inhabited town center on a central promontory. The castle, churches, viewpoint and walking trail each offer a different perspective: the castle reaches far back into history, the religious buildings reflect different architectural styles and historical periods, while the Belvedere and Sentiero Il Monte Lungo offer their own views of the landscape. You can shape your trip around architecture and history, the landscape, or a specific event date.
Castle and History
The history of Murisengo Castle dates back at least to 940. Another historical milestone is a diploma issued by Emperor Frederick I, known as Barbarossa, on October 6, 1164. It lists Murisengo among the lands granted to William the Elder, Marquis of Montferrat. The two dates point to different historical contexts: the castle’s long history and the town’s mention in an imperial diploma. The castle entrance, by contrast, is a historical reconstruction from the late 19th century. Built in 1891 in a medieval style, it features a terracotta depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin by Luca della Robbia. This makes it possible to distinguish between the castle’s long history and the much later design of its entrance.
Churches and Architecture
The churches offer points of interest both in their form and in their historical associations. The Romanesque tower of San Pietro is the surviving part of a church mentioned in medieval ecclesiastical records. It dates to the first or second quarter of the 12th century and is an accessible, renovated viewpoint. The Chiesa di San Luigi Gonzaga Corteranzo stands out for its distinctive pagoda-like shape; it is freely accessible during services. The parish church of San Candido is recorded as a rural church in the records of the 1584 apostolic visitation. Sant’Antonio Abate offers another architectural point of reference: the parish church was built from 1748 to 1754 to a design by the architect Peruzzi and is considered one of the finest examples of Piemontese Rococo. Together, these sites represent different forms and historical periods, from the Romanesque tower to the Rococo church.
Views and La Pirenta
The Belvedere offers a broad view over the surrounding hills. Artistically designed benches, a new staircase and an information board are also part of this viewpoint. The Sentiero Il Monte Lungo walking trail offers a different perspective on the landscape, passing through the town and the woods, with views of cultivated fields and the surrounding countryside.
East of Murisengo, at the foot of Montelungo, lies the sulfur spring of La Pirenta. It emerges from tuff- and limestone-rich ground. A flourishing spa developed at Fontana La Pirenta between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, the spring flows from a lion’s mouth set into a Neo-Gothic fountain dated 1859. Here, the geological setting, the former spa history and the fountain’s design can be considered as distinct aspects.
Walking and the Truffle Fair
The Sentiero Il Monte Lungo walking trail starts in the square in front of Murisengo Town Hall, passes through the town and returns to the municipal square. Woods and views of cultivated fields add a landscape perspective to the route through town. Along with the broad views of the hills from the Belvedere, this creates a clear distinction: the Belvedere focuses on views from a viewpoint, while the walking trail connects the town, woods and fields.
The International White Truffle Fair “Trifola d’Or” offers an additional reason to visit. In 2026, it is scheduled for November 15 and 22. The event is classified as an international market fair focused on truffles and food and wine. If you are planning your trip around the fair, check the event dates before booking.
