Carbonara Scrivia lies on the right bank of the Scrivia. The river landscape, a walking route, historic buildings and regional tastings offer different ways to shape a stay. If you are looking for hotels for a trip here, you can consider whether you are more interested in the open countryside, the town’s history or regional products.

Landscape and walking route

The land rises gradually from the banks of the Scrivia and has a distinctive terraced layout. The gravelly soils typical of riverbeds drain very well; this characteristic encourages the growth of certain crops typical of the area. The terraces describe the rise in the land, while the gravelly soil shows another aspect of the river landscape.

A route description from 2020 describes a walking route that begins in Carbonara Scrivia. It follows country lanes around Spineto Scrivia up to the ridge between the Scrivia and the Ossona, then follows the E1 European long-distance path to Montale Celli, a hamlet of Costa Vescovato. The route passes through entirely open countryside with meadows, cornfields, alfalfa and vineyards. To understand the tour, both its route along country lanes and the ridge and the open countryside along the way are important.

Church, art and local history

The present-day Church of San Martino was built in 1780 on the site of its predecessor. Its façade was renovated in 1972. A precious wooden polyptych dated 1495 survives from an earlier Church of San Martino. These dates distinguish the history of the artwork, the construction of the church and the later renovation of the façade.

The Dongione of Carbonara Scrivia is a castle tower notable for its rare typology. The Rocca is thought to date from the 14th century or the early years of the 15th century. This tentative dating differs from the precisely dated information about the church and the polyptych.
