San Salvatore Monferrato offers several reasons to explore the town: historic buildings, religious traditions, a named route and recurring festivals. When planning your stay, you can decide what to focus on based on whether you are particularly interested in architectural history and art, local traditions, or routes and views.

Tower, churches and religious traditions

The Torre Paleologa was built in 1413 at the request of Teodoro II Paleologo, the ruler of Monferrato at the time. Standing 24 metres tall, it originally served as an observation and signal post. Its history can therefore be understood not only through its date of construction, but also through its purpose. Its patron, date and function each offer different clues to the tower’s history.

The churches also offer two distinct historical reference points. The Chiesa di San Martino, a parish church in the town centre, was built in the 15th century. It houses works by Guglielmo Caccia, including depictions of the Virgin Mary and the Mysteries of the Rosary. The Chiesa di San Siro dates from the 16th century. Those interested in architectural history can therefore explore two churches associated with different centuries; San Martino also offers an art collection.

The Santuario Madonna del Pozzo was built on the site where, according to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the soldier Martino de Nava in a miracle said to have taken place in 1616. The story is also linked to PrimaFesta, the traditional patron saint’s festival of San Salvatore Monferrato. This place brings together religious tradition and local festive customs, without presenting the reported apparition as an ordinary historical event.

Route, views and events

Route 45 takes its name from following the 45th parallel. For hikers and cyclists, it offers a different thematic experience from the churches and historic buildings: its name alone points to a geographical line. Another point of interest is Big Bench No. 92 in the hamlet of Villa Olimpia, in Rione Prelio. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views across a large part of the surrounding area.

The festivals add a seasonal reason to choose the town. Alongside PrimaFesta, Settembre Sansalvatorese is listed as an annual festival in San Salvatore Monferrato. The two events therefore have different classifications: PrimaFesta is the traditional patron saint’s festival and is linked to the Madonna del Pozzo tradition; Settembre Sansalvatorese is an annual festival. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the specific event dates before making arrangements.
