Odalengo Piccolo offers a range of options for a stay: hiking trails, a public Astronomical Observatory, historic buildings, and a landscape shaped by forests and vineyards. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the routes and themes: some trails pass through the town, while others form part of a larger regional network. There are also stargazing sessions on public opening evenings and a seasonal highlight featuring white truffles and heritage apple varieties.

Hiking Trails and Regional Routes

The Superga–Crea hiking trail passes through Odalengo Piccolo. The Superga–Vezzolano–Crea hiking trail is a separate route: it passes through the provinces of Alessandria, Asti and Turin and can be travelled year-round on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. So when choosing, consider whether you are looking for a route that passes through the town or one for which several modes of travel are specifically mentioned.

The Alessandria section of the Cammino di San Michele also passes through Odalengo Piccolo, between Villadeati and Castelletto Merli. In the Fauna Protection Oasis, a circular trail starts at the observatory and heads towards LocalitĂ  Rondaneto. Check local trail conditions before setting out. The landscape on the hike to Castello di Pessine offers views of the hills of Basso Monferrato; in clear conditions, Monte Rosa, the Gran Paradiso massif and Monviso can also be seen from the route.

On the route to Castello di Pessine, follow trail marker 705 as far as Cascina Carpugnano. From there, occasional CAI Casale signs point towards the Cesare Triveri trail (Superga–Crea). Since trail conditions and signage can change, it is advisable to check the signs on site. A cycling route by Pedalare Il Monferrato also leads to Odalengo Piccolo; on asphalt, it continues towards the hamlet of Vicinato and then back towards Pessine. Here too, take current trail conditions into account.

Observatory and Outdoor Excursions

The public Astronomical Observatory of Odalengo Piccolo was inaugurated in 2007. On public opening evenings, visitors can tour the observatory, observe the sky through its instruments and hear explanations from members of the astronomy group. Booking for evening events is arranged through the Cielo del Monferrato group’s website. Check event dates and booking information before making plans.

A picnic area in Spina Christi is about 200 metres from the observatory. As the condition of facilities can change, check whether they are currently available before visiting. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the observatory with time outdoors without confusing the different offerings on site.

Two-thirds of the territory of Odalengo Piccolo lies within a Fauna Protection Oasis recognised by the Province of Alessandria. Together with the forests and vineyards, this protected area shapes the character of the landscape. The circular trail starting at the observatory is a practical option for anyone wishing to combine time outdoors with a route within the oasis.

Historic Buildings and Local Produce

Castello di Pessine is a private manor house currently undergoing restoration. A stone bearing the symbol of the Agnus Dei, dated 1386, is set above the portal. In Pessine, the Chapel of San Sebastiano also has a distinctive architectural form: its simple façade is designed like a temple and topped by a triangular pediment.

The settlement of Visinalis, now the hamlet of Vicinato, already existed at the end of the 13th century. It was laid out around a church dedicated to Saints Mary and Peter. Another historic stop is the small Church of San Pietro near Serra, dating from the early 19th century. Alongside the trails and landscape, these places add a historical focus to a stay.

The preservation of heritage apple varieties is also part of the area’s character. The “Melamangio in Monferrato” centre preserves more than 150 old varieties from Monferrato, including Marcun, Ciucarina and Canditina. Their names reflect the diversity of this regional tradition; however, the centre’s description does not promise visitor services such as tastings or guided tours.

The traditional Fiera Tufo&Tartufo is held every year on the first Sunday in October and celebrates white truffles and heritage apple varieties. In a 2026 announcement, the municipality described Tufo & Tartufo as a regional fair promoting culinary products as well as craft and hobby creations. If you would like to plan your stay around the event, check the dates for the relevant year.
