The municipal area of Rionero Sannitico is predominantly mountainous. For travelers looking for a hotel in Rionero Sannitico, its historic buildings, waterways and described routes offer concrete points of reference for assessing the destination according to their own interests.

Mountain Landscape and Waterways

Elevations range from 575 meters above sea level at the Torrente Vandrella, on the border with the municipality of Forlì del Sannio, to 1,304 meters at Pratelle. The waterways also give the landscape specific names: the Torrente Rio rises near the town center and is a tributary of the Volturno. The Torrente Vandrella, also called “La Vandra,” rises on the border with Abruzzo, is a mountain stream and is fed by numerous springs along its course.

The vegetation of the municipal area is typical of the Molise Apennines. Oak coppices of Turkey oak predominate, either as pure stands or mixed with downy oak and European hop-hornbeam. Together with the mountainous terrain, the waterways and woodland communities form a distinctive landscape alongside the buildings in the town.

Churches, Art and History

The Chiesa di San Bartolomeo Apostolo is a religious building of historical and cultural significance. Its striking façade is made of limestone, while the interior is richly decorated in the Baroque style. Round-arched arcades divide the three naves; the floor plan also includes a single apse. The furnishings include paintings and marble altars attributed to local artists of the 17th and 18th centuries. The church’s spatial layout and individual decorative details are both noteworthy.

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire is a subsidiary church dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary and is of great importance to the local community. These churches complement the art-historical features of San Bartolomeo with further religious landmarks in the town.

The ruins of the Palazzo Ducale also form part of Rionero Sannitico’s historical landscape: the Carafa dukes built the palace in the 17th century for military purposes. The Santuario di San Mariano brings together several historical periods. The original sanctuary was built in 1600 and restored in 1926 by Italian emigrants from Cleveland. Plaster statues dating from the 19th century are venerated there; the relics of the two martyrs are kept in a reliquary bearing the coat of arms of the Carafa della Spina family.

Next to the sanctuary is a grotto that is believed to have served as a refuge for the two holy Roman soldiers who converted to Christianity. On April 30, statues of the two saints are carried in a procession to commemorate their martyrdom. A visit to the sanctuary thus brings together its architectural history, religious devotion and the possible interpretation associated with the grotto.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

For an excursion on September 25, 2024, the CAI described a hike through the historic town center and into the unspoiled natural surroundings of the Volturno Valley. It is classified as a T-grade tourist hike and is suitable for hikers of all experience levels. The route follows cart tracks, mule tracks and unpaved sections, passing through narrow lanes as well as old fountains and evocative chapels. If you plan to follow this route today, check trail conditions locally.

The hiking route reaches the Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela and follows it for part of the way. This historic transhumance route crossed the Apennines from north to south. For navigation, hikers can therefore take into account both the trail conditions and stops in town, as well as a section of the historic livestock route.

A cycling tour runs 143 kilometers from Avezzano in the province of L’Aquila to a stage in Rionero Sannitico in Molise. It is divided into four stages to be completed over four days. On the described cycling route, the climb to Valico del Macerone begins in Rionero Sannitico; check local road conditions when planning. The tour information has a different focus from the hiking description: here, the stages, total distance and duration provide guidance, while the hiking description gives the difficulty level, surface and waypoints.

Road Directions
