Colli A Volturno combines nature experiences along the Volturno with Samnite and medieval history. The municipal area includes extensive flat stretches along the riverbanks, suitable for walks on foot and on horseback. Forest landscapes, a specific hiking trail, archaeological evidence and local feast days give a stay a variety of points of interest.

Landscape by the River and in the Mountains

Monte San Paolo features evergreen vegetation and Mediterranean scrub, providing a habitat for wild boar, foxes and hares. Monte La Falconara is covered in coppice woodland and includes a pine forest frequented by day-trippers and hikers. The stretch of the Volturno within Colli A Volturno borders a protected area and is considered a site of great natural interest.

Serra del Lago offers a different seasonal landscape: in winter, it turns into a large pond and serves as a resting place for migratory birds. Thus, alongside evergreen plants, scrub and forests, the winter water expanse and resting birds offer distinct natural points of interest. When planning your travel dates, you can consider this seasonal feature alongside the forest landscapes described as being there year-round.

Hiking Trail and Planning Your Time

The Sentiero Colli-Monte San Paolo begins in the built-up area of Colli A Volturno. It is five kilometres long, with a stated walking time of two hours. Seasonal conditions may vary, so it is worth taking them into account when planning your visit. This lets you plan the specific trail as a separate activity, while the flat stretches along the riverbanks are suitable for walks on foot and on horseback.

Samnite Traces and the Medieval Town Centre

A Samnite fortification with a circumference of six kilometres is located on Monte San Paolo. The settlement there is identified with the Samnite oppidum of Aquilonia, a legendary military base for protecting the Sannio and the site of the battle between the Romans and Samnites in 293 BC. This archaeological identification has not been conclusively established by scientific research.

The town centre also tells a long history: the medieval village, also known as “la piccola Parigi”, was founded around the 10th century by Benedictine monks from San Vincenzo al Volturno. The Chiesa di San Leonardo dates from the 15th century and houses important works by Pietro Brunetti. Gates, encircling walls, old passages, lanes, narrow side streets and stone steps shape the old town centre.

The history of the buildings also includes the Mulino Raddi, which began operating in 1830 and was powered by the waters of the Volturno, as well as the Volturno aqueduct. It supplied Venafro and runs through the entire area of Colli A Volturno. Together with the fortification and the Chiesa di San Leonardo, the mill and aqueduct offer further, distinct points of connection with local history.

Traditions and Feast Days

The feast of Sant'Antonio di Padova on 13 June includes a public auction of donated local produce. The celebrations for Sant'Antonino and Sant'Emidio on 2 September include a procession, fireworks, a marching band and evening entertainment. San Leonardo, the patron saint of Colli A Volturno, is celebrated on 6 November. These feast days offer different seasonal highlights from the winter landscape at Serra del Lago.

Choosing a Hotel for Your Trip

Riverbanks, forest landscapes and the Sentiero Colli-Monte San Paolo offer options for nature- and hiking-focused trip planning. The fortification, church, town centre, mill and aqueduct provide a historical focus. The feast days mentioned above and the winter pond may also influence your choice of travel dates.
